I'm waiting to receive my new AW17 which will only have the standard 8gb ram (there was no way I was going to pay £100 for an upgrade to 16gb!).

I'm thinking that when it comes, I might upgrade the ram as I wanted a minimum of 16gb ideally.

I was however wondering whether I could push it to 32gb or whether the system does not work well with that much? I read some reports that suggested 16gb was the maximum which the laptop could handle while others said 32gb worked fine.

i was looking at possible getting ram from either crucial or Kingston the of whom also do the ram ranges with big heat sinks and funky names - do these actually make a difference in reality? I'm not looking at over clocking the ram and will buy the same MHz as the laptop comes with. I'll mainly use it for gaming so it will get hot but I am not sure whether these ranges are mostly just for those that overclock to the extreme.

Congrats and welcome....This thread will help you.

If you need it, definitely upgrade to 32GB. I'm running two 16GB sticks of G.Skill and it works flawlessly.

    Cheers

That's great, thank you very much indeed! Is there any real difference between the four brands mentioned in that thread? Last time I built a PC (many many years ago - when having 512mb was a hell of a lot) I just bought the cheapest but I don't want something now that will not last.

I tend to go with the sticks that the majority are using and with a confirmed track record.

Any one of the brands will work fine. I do tend to favor Samsung or SKHynix chips over the others. (These are found in our motherboards and computers in general.)

Thanks for that. The g.skill is quite expensive in comparisson to the crucial sticks so I'll need to have a think about it. Do I take it those are heat sinks on the gskill sticks? Do they have any impact or are they really just for decoration?

Heat sinks? I think you may be looking at the desktop RAM sticks...the laptop memory does not have Heat Sinks on them. The grey, blue and white stripes is a sticker that you're seeing.

Did you click on the link in that thread over the RAM stick name? Or click this and it'll bring you directly to the correct ones.
