Hey all,
I need to get a new backpack for this beast but I'm reluctant to get the vindicator 2.0 because of the price. Is it really worth the money or are there some good alternatives for a laptop this size which are good build quality as well? (Good enough to trust a 3 grand laptop in!)

May I introduce you to a visual sibling (tho so much in spirit) of the alienware?
Joking aside, I'm also looking for a leather sleeve for the aw17... might actually have to custom order one from an artisanal leather shop

There plenty of cheaper backpacks out there, but you kind of get what you pay for. I got the vindicator 2.0 for my 17r4 because i got dell credit for my purchase, but even if i didnt i still probably would have bought it anyways. The main issue is that the r4 its just a weird size. I ran into a similar issue when i owned my sager because it was so thick, i went though like 10 backpacks trying to find one that actually held the thing safely in place, which surprisingly the vindicator 1.0 was the only one that manage to fit the bill. 17 inch backpacks are too small for the r4 and 18.4 in backpacks are just to big. The main selling point for the vindicator is that it fits the laptop like a glove because it was designed around it. It lacks a bit in the accessories area, but it makes up for in in padding and honestly at the end of the day the price really isnt that bad considering its about what the price of a decent similar 18.4 bag would cost. You would probably get more pockets with a different bag, but you would loose some of the protection.

I have the previous generation Vindicator and I use it every single day and it is still holding up pretty well after 3 years. They are up there in price but they do seem to hold up pretty well.

I bought both the Vindicator 2.0 bags (messenger and backpack). I prefer the backpack because of the space. With a Logitech pico receiver in one of the USB A ports, I can barely get it in the messenger.
As to price, they are mid priced bags. For my previous laptop (M3800) I used a Travelon Anti-Theft messenger bag and traveled from Montreal to Africa, Dominican Republic, and the US. It held 2 laptops, bluetooth speaker, tablet and all their chargers. I cannot get all that in the Vindicator messenger bag, barely into the backpack. Unfortunately, Travelon doesn't make a bag big enough for the Alienware. The closest bag would be a Timbuktu bag, but I am uncertain about their protection. A big thing about using distinctive bags like the Vindicators is that they scream expensive machines...
I hope that helps. -
I would be very interested in this as well and will be following!
Personally prefer a messenger style bag over a backpack. Two things kept me from the vindicator:
1. Some reviews said there was barely enough room for the computer. Let alone a mouse and the power supply.
2. Simple fact is I don't have the ability to keep this under a close eye. It controls my PA system and lighting system. When I am loading and unloading items need to get set down for the next trip of carrying gear. Something about the vindicator just screams, "hey you, yeah no one is lookin. You know you want to. Just do it... Just take me... You could be outta here before anyone notices!"
The bag I had my 17r3 in was just a simple over the shoulder side pack that looked like a university students bag.... Unfortunately with the added vent cover it will not fit.
I loved that bag...
Gave it to my wife.
Oh! And for the record.... And she plays minecraft... Thats it.... I gave her the 17r3 6700hq gtx970 500gb ssd. Her responce? "Oh I get the old computer"
I am sure there is a starving kid in the world somewhere that wouldnt complain about it being old and just try to eat it and be happy.Pete Light and SimplyJ3sse like this. -

Consider Targus Strike. I'm not sure whether it will fit the R4, but I'm using it for my 17 R3 and it fits totally fine with sufficient padding.

Alternatively you can get the Everki Titan, it's designed for 18" laptops so it definitely fits the 17 R4, and it have plenty of space inside and it's more well made. Very pricey but worth the price tag. -

I've been using the Slappa MASK backpack and the Jedi trolley for my M17x R3, and I've loved them both. I plan to continue to use them when the new 17 R4 arrives. They're both very roomy and, with the Jedi strap front, I can attach a full sized keyboard in its own cast to the front of each.
