I'm about to pull the trigger on a 17 R4 1080 from Hidevolution. I notice that a "new" panel showed up with their kaby lake version; QHD 120Hz Gsync from AUO.

    "The 3K QHD (2560x1440) 120Hz refresh rate AUO with nVIDIA® G-SYNC™ Technology"
    "17.3 inch QHD (2560x1440) 120Hz TN Anti-Glare 400-nits NVIDIA G-SYNC Enabled w/Tobii Eye-tracking"

It seems like a good match for the 1080.

Are there any reviews on this specific panel?

    Thanks

as far as i know there is only one source for this screen and it has the white line issue
and all people who got replacements still have the white lines , and not just in alineware . auros first and also clevo and sager laptops

and unfortunately i placed my order since 13th of novmeber with Hidevolution and still there is no date for delivery or anything
it was kinda a good thing it got delayed because now alienware fixed the heatsink and other thinks as well , plus the kaby lake
but imagine mine with a 1070 and still delayed so brace yourself for something similar or more :((

This is driving me nuts, is everyone just rushing to get these laptops out without reviewing the quality of panels, paste and whatnot?

Tbh I'm not the fussyist but I have the QHD TN panel and it has absolutely zero light bleed and no horizontal lines at all, even when you get real close!

I have the 17r3 uhd screen, very very minimal bleed on a side, lowest on any of my devices. But my screen is phenomenal, better quality than on my precision 7710 4k, or my 27" LG 4k panel.

Not sure if it's the same one used in the 17r4, but just throwing that out there.

I just watched a video about the white lines, I'm not sure I would even notice. My eyesight ain't exactly 20/20 anymore either :)

I swear some people just don't see it just like my cousin. That could be a blessing or some screens just aren't as bad. Mine was really really bad! And I had it swapped by Dell 3 times.

You might want to call HID, They were robbed recently and that may have affected new orders and current orders.

I am one of the most pickiest people when it comes to things like this.
I was one of the most outspoken people about this at first. Even with directly speaking with Dell and a couple of their engineers...
Fast forward to now, I do want a panel that does not exhibit these lines, however the benefits truely out weigh the lines.
For example, I hardly notice them anymore. Plus, ANY other panel will have 25ms-27ms response time, to me that is worse then the lines.
Still this is the best gaming panel you can get on a laptop.
Plus, when they fix it, which they are in the process of, they will replace it with the updated version. :)

The problem I think lies with the FRC unit, these AUO panel is a 6 bit native but they make it 8 bit.

If your FRC unit isn't working well then the panel will have some issue with picture and color reproduction (hence the lines)

I found a couple of sources for those panels on eBay, and they are not that expensive. Worst case I can just replace it myself if it's not good enough. Terrible about the HID robbery :/

Where did you find the info about them fixing the panels?

Can't wait for the update on the replacement QHD. Besides from the banding issue, it was one of the best TN displays out there. Really looking forward to it.

I just got a new 17r4 delivered on March 2nd 2017 and I noticed the banding. I thought I was going nuts or that is was an artifact of the 150% UI scaling that was default.

So what is going to be the fix for the banding? Send it back and get a replacement panel?
If so then that will suck - it took them two months to get me the laptop from order date to delivery date this time, can't imagine a repair.
I might hold off on repasting too then.

I almost want to recommend final information found here as a sticky.

Personally I've been watching these threads for some time and would REALLY like to know when the issue, if any, is resolved. Model numbers of known good panels would be fantastic as well!!

I currently have the 1080p FHD panel (w/ tobii if that makes a difference). Was thinking of grabbing the UHD panel.... But I keep on reading from those with good QHD panels that its one of the most beautiful displays for gaming when its done right. Also I have the GTX1070. The UHD would just suck too much juice from that card.... I could downscale .... but that leaves me where I already am... a 1080p display that I am not particularly impressed with. The BEST panel I ever had, and I wish I could remember what is was, was in an Asus G72. I had a friend over and his first remark was on how beautiful the panel was.

Really want the 120Hz refresh as well.

I know a new cable is required for the upgrade from FHD to UHD. Is this a requirement for FHD to QHD as well?

    Already owned a 17r3 w/ 6700hq and gtx970
    Bought 17r4 w/ 6820hk and gtx1070

Whats worse is I quite literally notice no difference between the two. I know there is a difference! I know the specs are better.... but when I am actually sitting at the computer and using it/gaming .... yep... no difference. Same real world experience... This is probably due to the fact that both machines are fully capable of rendering everything on the FHD 1080p display.

QHD and UHD uses the same 40 pin cable so you will have to essentially upgrade the cable coming from the FHD panel. There is a new QHD panel which eliminate the horizontal line distortion. Dell Part# JYWWF. Heard its a beautiful display. Since its a new panel, we will have to continue to wait for more inventory from Dell.

IMO, if you want the best for fast gaming while still have the higher resolution that doesn't kill your GPU(especially for the GTX 1070) then the QHD panel will definitely hit the sweet spot.

    Excellent!

Any info on the actual part/panel number from AUO?

    Thank you!

From day one the first thing I asked dell for was a 120hz display. Got my machine w/ a 60hz. Was given the run around for weeks and was told to return it by their tech support..... Soooo... I found an overstock of the same machine and panel + twice the nvme size, twice the mem, and tobii @ the same price.... I returned my unit and bought that. Yeah didn't get my panel... But hey. I got a few upgrades.

On the plus: my original machine had micron gpu mem. The overstock item... Samsung :)

    Tobii.... Still useless. Lol

I can confirm the lines on the QHD screen from earlier batches do not appear on the kabylake systems. I just got mine not long ago and it's very apparent when you put it next to the old screens with the lines.

I just picked up an open box Alienware 17R4 today with the QHD display, and I'm really noticing the lines. If you contact alienware/dell would they be willing to replace the screen to address this issue or should I consider returning the laptop?

they should arrange a screen replacement or system replacement by technician

you just have to act that the qhd is ruining your life, breaking up your family, killing your relative. what have you
