Guys, I need your help. I was playing and suddently the notebook froze. I turned it off long pressing the power button, but now it doesn't start anymore. When I press the power button the side lights and the keyboard come on but the screen remains black and the fans turn on and gradually increase their speed. Then the PC turns off by itself. No beeps. No error codes.
Have you ever seen such behavior? Ideas?

My R4 occasionally develops a somewhat similar issue...
It never turns off, but once powered off when it is turned back on it won't post and I get the same behavior. The screen is black and the fans gradually spin up to full speed but it never really goes anywhere. Sometimes it restarts and sometimes it does not.
Most of the time if I hard power it down and then turn it back on it goes back to normal, but once in awhile every few months it seems to stick for several restarts and persists for a day or two, then seems to go away....I have never found the cause or issue. This most recent round with it, just a few days ago, I am also getting a secure boot error when the screen does turn on. As of yesterday it's completely back to normal again.
Things I have tried:
Power drain ( have not tried pulling cmos yet )
Bios roll back / update
Updated every driver I can think of, but it shouldn't even be pulling drivers yet this early in the boot process
Disable fast boot
Disable secure boot
Reset bios settings to default
I have never found the cause or a solution but thus far it has always gone back eventually, and then it works perfectly fine for another few monthsCarillo Gallardo likes this. -

Ho guys, thank for your replies. I made a video for you.
As you can see and hear, the lights turn on, the notebook seems to want to boot, but then the fans begin to blow stronger and stronger and finally the notebook turns off by itself. I have already tried the procedure to clear the CMOS and remove and replace RAM and SSD, but nothing.

Is it possibile to do a blind flash of the bios like on older Alienware notebooks (M18x)?Last edited: Dec 19, 2019 -
My original m17Xr4 developed charging issues repeatedly and they upgraded me to the Alienware 17R1 which several years in the GPU died and they replaced it 3 times with faulty 780m's before upgrading me to this one.
What happens when you hold down the FN key and turn it on? Any difference? That snapped mine out of the black screen when I tried it, or it seemed to, maybe it was just coincidence.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 20, 2019Carillo Gallardo and Papusan like this. -

Only thing left I can think of is full power reset. remove the battery and CMOS battery and maybe that will trigger something to reset. If all of this fails to work then you are probably looking at a hardware failure.
As for blind BIOS flashing, I want to say there was a post about this, but I honestly don't know where it was or even if it was for this model.Carillo Gallardo likes this. -
I have already done a CMOS reset. At this point I also think it is a hardware problem, like a dead GPU.
