If you can source the panel there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to install it.

I am looking for an answer on this as well, but on the opposite direction. Is it possible to change the 4K screen to FHD?

I have 4K and I do not like it one bit.

    1. It has yellow tint that I could not get rid of no matter how much I calibrated it. Color temp on these is 6,200K I believe. You DO NOT get WHITE WHITEs.

    2. Not a single desktop app works properly unless you spend a day on trying to fix it (Outlook HTML mails are narrow colums, Thunderbird unreadable, Photoshop CS6 UI is so small, impossible to read and countless others) and many you will not be able to fix at all.

    3. Setting screen resolution to 1920 x 1080 does no good. Many items are blurry despite ClearType tuning.

You should get a 4K screen only and only if you are not using your laptop anything work-related. 4K is too much work, maybe in 10 years.

Oh I love 4K for professional productivity. But weird that the 4k has color issues. From what I have experienced with the AW15R1 UHD version it was pretty good. and surpassing the Macbook retina screens. You can change out the screen if you can find the right panel.

I found this post thinking the same thing.

    I have a new fhd alienware 17 6th generation.
My buddy's 17 4k took some damage but the screen is ok.

You have to switch out the entire display assembly but it works out just fine.
Switching just the screen itself will not work. Found out the hard way.
The screen bezel will not fit back on properly and screen wont shut all the way....

Upon boot you have to uninstall the Intel drivers, and go to Dell's website and download the ones for the 4k model. That gives you access to more power options to eliminate the auto dimming.

Screen is absolutely beautiful and bright compared to the FHD.
My 980m can handle games at 2560x1900 just fine.

4k is the ONLY way to go if you have the chance. You should compare the 4k screen on the Alienware to the IPS screens on the MSI......You would never want to go back.

I did it and I love it! I was under the impression that the refresh rate goes down to 30hz though and there is only the options for 48hz and 60hz. Abit annoying.

Just wanted to jump in and say that the change is completely possible if you can get the LCD. You can try eBay or Newegg.

I have done a lot of research on upgrading my fhd to uhd on my 17 r3, not only because of the resolution, but also because the contrast, brightness, and color specs are way better on the 4k. So far this is what I have found... The fhd panel has an eDP 30 pin (2 lane) connector, and the fhd panel has an eDP 40 pin (4 lane) connector. I am going to take mine apart tonight to make sure, but from what I'm reading online, the connector is 40 pin on every 17 r3 board. If my hunch is correct, everything should fit if i replace the cable with the correct one to fit the uhd display. Any thoughts?

Well I did it to mine. You do need the 40 pin edp cable for the 4k screen. But i did it and the screen is a beaut! I did have to cut abit off of each hinge tho to make it fit but its been sweet for the last 6 months
