I ordered a new 17 R3 and now I am experience what appears to be coil whine. I'm hearing a slight hiss that is noticeable in a quiet room when the computer has the fans off. This appears to happen when the processor has a light load on it. Scrolling a webpage or downloading GBs of data from steam seem to make it happen the most. Using HW monitor you can see the voltage and clock speed of the CPU changing and this seems to be when the noise is happening.

I have the 6820HK. Is some coil whine to be expected with this processor? I didn't notice it with my previous R3 which had the 6700HQ.

It's not the cpu but the motherboard. I have a slight hiss/electronic noise too. Its pretty much normal.

That's completely normal. Don't worry about it.

I am on my second AW17R3. The first had coil whine so loud it was driving me insane. Tech Support swapped out the unit with a new one and the coil whine is much reduced. Its only audible now very occasionally whereas the old one would make noise all the time.

    I find this noise distracting.

It appears to be coming out of the bottom left of the PC near the fans, but strangely the speakers seems to be repeating the noise. It's a scratchy buzzy sound. It doesn't seem to be amplified because lowering and raising the volume does not effect the volume of the noise.

    Gonna necro this thread.

My Alienware 17 R3 started doing some unusual sounds today that seem to be coil whine, that didn't exist before.

These two particular samples i was only moving the mouse with no applications running, but the pitch and frequency of this change as i do different activities, HDD read/write is particularly the noisiest, while running a game basically eliminates it.

I just noticed this however and it could get worse for all i know, but the real question is....is it an indicator of a failing component??, my warranty has only 5 days left, should i be contacting dell and get and extension?
