This new computer is mainly to sit next to my Dell XPS 15 9550 for gaming and photo editing as well as some AutoCAD/ Revit work. I have also been considering an eGPU: Aorus Gaming Box with 1070 ($999) but that is a totally different thing.

    Question is... AW15 or AW17?

    In Singapore, Dell offers...

    Alienware 15 $4800
    i7-7820HK
    16GB DDR4 2667MHz
    512GB PCIe SSD + 1TB 7200RPM
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X (with Max Q Design technology) - 110W
    15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) 120Hz TN+WVA Anti-Glare 400-nits NVIDIA G-SYNC Enabled Display

    vs

    Alienware 17 $5299
    i7-7820HK
    16GB DDR4 2667MHz
    512GB PCIe SSD + 1TB 7200RPM
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X
    17.3 inch QHD (2560x1440) 120Hz TN AG 400-nits w/ NVIDIA G-SYNC, Enabled with Tobii Eye-tracking

    ------SEPERATE QUESTION----
    Which one?
    - AW17 with GTX1070 UHD
    - AW17 with GTX1070 FHD
    - AW17 with GTX1080 QHD 120GSYNC

I've heard there is many issues with the panel hence the question. I don't think the difference between the 1080 and 1070 will really matter to me. I'm tired of the problems with my Dell XPS 15...

I would avoid the TN panels if professional work is important to you... otherwise you'd have to use an external screen. I found the QHD unusable for any editing work.

I'd go with the 17, but that'll depend on how important portability comfort is. I think the weight difference is only like 2.5 lbs though.

You'll most likely have to do a repaste also. Though some people get good stock temps.

The QHD is only available with the 1070. That's why I'm split between the two. I want the 1080 with QHD but it's not available in that configuration.

    Alienware has problems as well.

Advice is to wait till they release the new model next month, and this way you can try saving some $$ by getting only 1TB 7200RPM. Trust me when I say this but the current one is a bit hit and miss. I bought one lol

That's not totally true, call and talk to a sales rep. I have a 1080 with a QHD and Gsync and love the hell out of it. At the time tho this config was not on there market when I bought it but the sales rep had a few more options I could choose from.

New model tends to come out around September and it's already 1/2 way though August. So I would suggest waiting. (That's me.)

I’ll be waiting then although my XPS15 9550 constantly stutters even while playing GW2...

Need a new laptop with amazing graphics and an amazing screen...
