Hi. I recently bought a new Alienware 15 R3 with gtx 1070 and i7 7700HQ. Loaded up some monitoring software to monitor my temps after I noticed some crazy throttling when I tried to play Project Cars 2. I was playing for approx. 3min when I took these screenshots of my temps.

Not normal temps. Normal temps are <85C for full load on cpu and gpu.

Yea I just got off the phone with customer service. I'm going to return this one and try a brand new one. If it has the same problem I'm just going to be done with it and get a refund. The alternative was to have tech repair come out and replace my motherboard. The temps are not normal at all, they like to sky rocket randomly even when I'm just using the internet.

I did try undervolting with that intel extreme tuning utility. It worked for a little but temps were still hitting 98C. To make matters worse my 230w ac adaptor died so now I can't even use it until my new one arrives. I shouldn't have to undervolt a brand new laptop out of the box it should just work.

That's the thing with Dell/Alienware, it's just absurd with its issues. The only reason I even have one right now is because I need a working laptop, but I can't justify buying the price at once which is why the 0% interest made things palatable.

What? I had heard that the latest batch of 15R3 have had their thermal issues sorted out and most people didnot have this issues recently. That only some lemon laptops remained. I have been heavily considering buying 15 R3 with gtx1070 and 1080p IPS screen. And that undervolting and providing some open elevated space for the back exhausts reduced the temps by a large amount.
Should i reconsider buying this or alteast give a try?
If not what other laptop you would suggest me buying within range 1500-1700$? Please advice i have to buy the laptop within 3-4 days.

If you have the money, consider building a laptop from Clevo/Eurocom/Sager. Yes, heatsinks might be better now for the R3, but it's the tripod design on the CPU that's making a lot of issues. I can't find all the resources but here are some threads that can help you. Try browsing the last 15 or so pages from those threads after reading the first post.

EDIT: The tripod heatsink issue isn't the only one that's making the problems.

Hey can you suggest any other laptop than Sager /Clevo as i have heard its great but i live in India and there is no service center of Clevo/Sager here.
what about asus gl502vs or 702 vs?
I have heard that they too have heating issues but they can be resolved via undervolting!
What about Acer predator with gtx 1070?

Undevolting, repasting, and repadding will be the easy quick fixes that I could think of. Sorry, I don't have a lot of other ideas about "good" laptops. I've only ever meant to buy Alienware or Clevo/Sager/Eurocom brands because they are the most, relatively, accessible sellers in Canada.

So you're suggesting me not to buy AW 15 R3 right?
I think its kind of luck right of whether a person gets an alright AW 15 or a lemon?

Well I got this laptop delivered in October 2017 so either I have a lemon or they haven't sorted anything out. Thing is I always buy Alienware laptops b/c they are really solid and my last two were a m11x R2 and a Area-51 m9750 before that. None of those machines had any issues what so ever. This new one feels solid but has some manufacturing or quality control issues so I am willing to give them one more shot. I will update you guys when I receive the new one.

I think Razor, MSI, and Asus have been getting good reviews but if its one of those new ultra thin gaming laptops they cost quite a bit more money, Razor in particular is quite expensive. I haven't went on any of those brands forums but I'm sure they all have their own little issues if you search for it.

On stock paste it normal to reach 90+ degrees, even mine shot up to 98-100C on 15 r2.
If you're willing to spend some extra cash on getting it fixed from factory and some extended warranty look at hidevolution.com
The prices looks expensive and even with maxed out config on hidevolution it will be same as base price of 15 r3. Please take a look at their site, there's a discount for NBR members as well.

Hey everyone. I just received my replacement 15 R3 in the mail today. I thought I would post an update of the new temps. Night and day difference with no more throttling issues or need to undervolt. The fans no longer run at max rpm 24/7 on high performance battery mode either. Overall I am impressed with the build the quality on this one, no dead pixels or creaks. I think I will keep this one but will continue to test it out in the next couple days.

Have you tried checking for the max temps using AIDA64?

Also can you please tell me are there any other coupons except the 10% off ones as the higher end models are very very very very very.......till infinity costly. I would like to be able to reduce some more cost.

As stock speeds go, your unit is fine. That was my case before as well. Evidently, the temps weren’t acceptable as I know they can be lower (and it’ll make the fans quieter too). Once you do repasting and repadding, then you’ll see the issues.

There is a 250$ off discount coupon that I used. When you spend over 1500$ you get 250$ off, you can stack it with that 10% one but I don't know if it is still valid.

What’s the temps like now a few months on. I reposted and saw a sufficient drop from 100c on 3 cores and the 1 at 99c lol. I now idle in the 30s but load varies from 86 to 95c for the cpus. I’d be happy if all was 86c if you got 83c. I only had this few hours used off eBay.
My load is based of running firestrike since that’s about the same as a game. My paste was artic silver mx4. Usually I use diamond 7. But dont know what happened to them.
Thinking of doing a warranty which expires next month.

Well I ended up re pasting with thermal grizzly and it is better but the cores are still uneven by about 5C. I've run about 5 or 6 games on it and my temps max out at about 78C except for BeamNG. It also depends if you run 4k vs 1080p. All of this was done with a 0.120v under volt and the max temp I have seen on my GPU is 65C, too bad my cpu's don't do that. I game at 1080p 90% of the time, I only really run older games a 4k since the hit isn't as bad as modern games.

Assassins Creed: Origins = Max settings @ 1080p = 65C core average--- 75/76C Max core temp ----- CPU package Max: 73C @ 60fps, cities drop it to 50-55
Max settings @ 4k = 69/70C core average --- 78C Max core temp ------ CPU pkg 75/76C Max: fps are almost cut in half 30-45

    Subnautica = Max settings @ 1080p = 63/64C core average --- 74/75C Max core temp ---- CPU pkg max : 71/72C ---- 55-60fps almost steady
    = Max settings @ 4k = 66/67C core avg ------- 77/78C Max core temp ---- CPU pkg max: 72/73C ---- 30-40fps

Fallout 4 Heavily Modded = Max settings @ 1080p = 65C core avg ------ 73/74C Max core temp ----- CPU pkg 70C Max: over 60fps except in cities
Max settings @ 4k = 68 core avg ------------- 76/77C Max core temp ------ CPU pkg 73C Max: prob under 20fps, its not very playable

    Ghost Recon Wild Lands = Max settings @ 1080p = 64/65C core avg ----- 73/74 Max core temp ---- CPU pkg max : 71/72C ----- 55-60fps
    = Max settings @ 4k = 67/68C core avg ---------- 75/76 Max core temp ---- CPU pkg max : 73C ------ 25-35fps maybe 40?

Beam NG = Max settings @ 1080p = 66/67C core avg -------- 76/77C Max core temp ----- CPU pkg Max: 73/74C ---- 45-60 avg can fluctuate on impacts
    = Max settings @ 4k = 71/72 core avg ---------------- 79/80 Max core temp -------- CPU pkg Max: 75/76C ------ 25-45fps

Do you have any regret of repasting it so soon if the temps never exceeded 83c?
I’d of kept it like that with no undervolt or any overclock as I’d only start doing this if I couldn’t afford to buy a new laptop and needed a bit more from it. 1070 is an upgrade to me. I can’t see how few extra FPS matter for me if I wasn’t missing it in the first place.
I’ll Rebench my temps on my aw13 to see how they are after a year as I left stock past on. I think they was 78c stock after synthetic test.

Anything within 85 on all cores and 70 on the GPU, I would consider normal.
