What I'm about to say is based on what I've read around the place, not personal experience. Some of it could be incorrect.

I believe the biggest difference is that the R1 had a glossy touchscreen, but the R2 originally came with a matte non-touch. The R2 has recently seen a glossy UHD touchscreen become available, but I don't know whether it's easy to get hold of.

In terms of picture quality, ignoring glossy vs matte, they should be pretty much the same.

The other thing to consider is that the R1 is an old model, with a last generation processor and RAM. It should only be a couple of months before the R2 is replaced with a new model. You're also not going to have a USB-C port (not that it matters much, for now) or support for NVMe SSD drives.

Plus the R1 is known for throttling issues. I've yet to experience throttling on my R2.
