So here's the thing, after using my aw 15 for sometime and then comparing the screen with my brothers aw 17xr4 , i noticed quite a lot of color banding on my display. Instances:-
    1)Steam library top right corners.
    2) http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php can see miniscular color bands in the grey section. Doesnt match the extreme case of banding they have shown in the bottom of the page , nor does it match the version of how it should look(smooth gradient without bands).
I checked about this on the internet, came to a conclusion that either dell used a 6bit display or an 8bit display w/o any form of dithering.(please confirm this and do inform me about the same).
Now the main question, how can i reduce this banding. Can anyone who doesn't have this or fixed this on their aw15 share their ICC color profile

Yeah the banding is because its a 6bit panel and you cant reduce it. a lot of panels have these issues by the way.

I had an hp probook which i bought for $400 ... it didn't have this issue ..... why is alienware using such poor quality displays :/
Anyways is there any method to force dithering in windows or any other method to reduce the obviousness(besides reducing gamma to abysmal levels :p)
Edit 1(curiousity):And why did editors praise the display even with this glaring issue(if it can represent 95% of the NTSC gamut shouldn't it be able to display gradient colors)

Because the displays are actually fairly high quality . I do not notice those banding issues much to be honest. so it might be more pronounced on your display. I have one with a LG panel by the way. THe brightness is good, the contrast is fairly good and I measured it with a color calibrating tool which measured over 1:900. The color range is just not good enough for professional DTPers for example and graphic designers. I do use it for professional graphic design though but I check my final work on an external screen.

If you wanted truly better then you should have bought the 4K screen I think. That screen surpasses the rMBP 15 screen and is considered one of the best panels in the laptop biz.

I would jus tuse half the resolution for gaming which is 1080P in my expriences looks just as good. But I am not sure why you have heavy color banding. I do have it but not that heavy.

I have strange banding at the background in Steam when I have selected a game. Because the indivdual banding stripes have a gradient inside them as well. Might be just a steam thing.

    1080p on a 4k screen looks very aliased(tested on a friend's 4k monitor)
Its not that heavy but its distracting .... but yeah there is banding for me even in alpha effects (like smoke , fog ,etc. but thats quite mild)
I have attached a screenshot of witcher 3 you can see the color bands on the sky

Yeah I have that too in the Witcher 3, but it doesn't bother me. I don't really notice it anywhere else while browsing the web or using steam or anything.

I was sent out 2 replacement systems with even worse screens that were all yellow and each had massive backlight bleeds. So I kept my original system and consider myself lucky with the screen that I have. For media and games it is truly gorgeous.

I have the Samsung FHD on the AW15 R1.

I've actually been using the icc profile found under the display section of this review of the AW 15 with the Samsung panel on notebook check:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Alienware-15-Notebook-Review.136667.0.html

This is the download link, not sure if it will work:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/tx_nbc2/AW15.icm

It doesn't change the colours too much on mine, but I like the look of it with this profile.
Not sure if it will reduce your banding, but it's worth a try!

Actually i was looking in the notebookreview page when i started noticing the banding for their calibration file.... never found it(who would imagine that the link would be so inconspicous)
and thank you for the direct link.. The profile reduced noticeable banding by a lot.
