I have had this computer for a bit over a year now, I use it 95% with a monitor plugged into the HDMI port. Lately it has started to have these flickering/strobing episodes, only on the external monitor. It is pretty severe, I can barely look at the screen. I also intermittently see little red green and blue vertical lines running down the screen and a ghost of an image beneath it. The laptop screen works fine. I tried replacing the cable, I even replaced the monitor thinking it had a bad capacitor. I've updated all drivers, Nvidia support said they can't figure out the issue, Alienware won't help me at all because my computer is 3 months out of warranty. I don't know what to do besides sell this pile of junk which has been nothing but problem after problem for me. I will NEVER buy Alienware or Dell again.

Any ideas what it could be?

Try the display port as well.
