I was just at Bestbuy, checking out laptops and I saw the AW17R3-3758SLV which is their UHD gaming laptop. What are the thoughts on the R3 and this gaming laptop? I see that it uses a 970, which in a 4k2k does not make any sense, but the external graphics could be a solution for that.

Generally I have stuck to ASUS laptops, but Alienware has always peaked my interests.

So does the lack of replies mean that I shouldn't buy Alienware? :D

You can get which one appeals to you more. You are in an Alienware forum so I suppose the responses you get will be pro Alienware... except there's a few naysayers in the house :)

With that being said, I choose AW over Asus because of the external graphics solution. That appealed to me more than what Asus offered... plus I've owned AW's in the past with a great history of quality machines. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Some negatives people will say are the BGA processors and Optimus issues and overclocking issues, but those didn't matter for me at all and probably not for the general public. I have the 4k w/ 980m and I'm sure a 970m can run the 4k fine. It probably won't max games out, but you can either drop the res or drop some features. I also picked up the 980TI and am blown away by it -- this coming from a guy who doesn't own any desktop machines tho.

The GA does take a small hit on performance, I've heard like 10-15% of the GPU if you were to use it in a desktop, but again, doesn't matter to me. I can max all my games on the 980TI at 4k w/ no problems even with the small performance loss of the GA.

Good luck on your purchase, whatever it is!

I have the BestBuy Alienware you speak of. It is fantastic and the 970m will run anything you throw at it, in 4k as well.
