Very odd, but my left fan at times gets quite loud at times, sounds almost though its a little rattling. Do you have this?

Be wary that there has been several occasions where one of the fans is faulty in the new 17 R3s, it happened to me as well and had the cpu fan replaced 1 month after the laptop was first used.

So, if there's any unusual sound coming from the fan, get dell to replace it before something else bites the dust cuz of it, unusual fan noises are very easy to spot, basically if there's any sound other than the air flowing through the vents that means something isn't right with the fan, fan replacements are usually very very fast so give dell a call.

Just don't open the laptop (i.e disassemble it)

One fan and i dont remember what side was sometimes louder in my aw15 depending on the load. But that was because that fan was actually running faster.

This sounds like my issue. It is the CPU fan. It happens very occasionally and when i manually control the fans via HWInfo and set that one to full, then back to auto..... the noise goes away and all is good. So i wonder if it is a driver issue

Mine had an audible whizzing sound when the fan was running at 30-50% speed.

It doesn't matter if the sound goes away or not as long as it comes back, like i said the only audible sound you should be getting from the fans is the sound of air flowing through the vents, any whizzing or whirring or clicking or scraping sound means the fan's gotta go.

Edit: here's a recording of the noise my fan has been doing https://clyp.it/3s4jyqsi

Another thing to note is that the left fan (cpu fan) is always gonna be louder than the right fan (gpu fan), because the processor is always running and the intel gpu runs when not using any 3d applications (unless you configure it otherwise), therefore the gpu fan only kicks in when running demanding stuff.
