Looks like the i7-4720HQ will be out soon with the AW15 at least, according to the updated spec on this page (wasnt there before). Has yet to be reflected on the actual model for sale.

The AW17 R2 model can be ordered already with the i7-4720HQ http://www.dell.com/nz/p/alienware-17-r2/pd

0.1 GHz doesn't sound like much, but is good.
100MHz increase on base and turbo, this is 4% boost, then considering Broadwell is only about 5% then is a pretty decent bump. Also taking into account an AW15 with 970M has no issues sustaining turbo even with overclocking, then makes is even more worth while to get the processor bump if ordering.
Each core offers a base speed of 2.6 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz (for 4 active cores), 3.5 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.6 GHz (for 1 active core).
Overclocked then 4 cores sustained at 3.6GHz is a decent speed. Once overclocked (although minus the iris pro) bring it inline to a i7-4960HQ stock speeds without going to that additional cost. Just another way to look at it. -
Just noticed on the NZ website with the AW15, if the 980M option (+$650) is chosen the processor changes to the i7-4720HQ, and the total price increases from $2400 to $3500.
Looks like Dell are automatically adding on +$1100 for just selecting the 980M option as forces quad core option, this hidden extra cost not displayed to the customer is absurd. That means the i7-4720HQ actually cost an additional $450
Not even worth bothering with it. -
I was just about to order an AW17 R2. I wonder when the US will get the 4720HQ option...

It's not really worth it even if it is $5 more.
It's a case of diminishing returns.
My machines boot in about 7 seconds and that includes the BIOS splash screen. I launch Chrome or any other program on either computer and it's about instant. My 4810mq in my System76 (Clevo) is 200Mhz faster then the 4710hq I have in this machine and no one would be able to tell the difference between the two machines. 100Mhz is not going to make instant more instant all of the sudden.
The only thing wrong with this AW is it it not using the PCI-e bus for storage. If it did, in theory, it could be faster. But still, what can be faster then instant? I don't even think that PCI-e storage would shorten my boot time.
4% isn't going to show anywhere except in the instance of people who want moar num3rs in benchmarks. In real world use, it will make no difference at all and is not worth any price increase.iPhantomhives likes this. -
The 970M option automatically adds $92 additional charge for the i7-4710HQ which is justifiable.
However the 980M option automatically adds $450 additional charge for the i7-4720HQ which is not justifiable. -
Hmm I'm in the market for a 15. Should I grab it now, or wait for the new processor to show up and then hope to find a good model in the outlet???
-
I went ahead and ordered. The possible jump in price for the 4720HQ isn't worth the 100mhz.
Got a great deal on one with the 980M. -
Also, I also bet that the Broadwell is coming possibly Q2-3 this year, and I'm sure that Dell will also refresh, so you might want to wait few more month if you want Broadwell. -

The i7-4720HQ should of been a free bump upgrade to replace the i7-4710HQ, the fact that Dell is charging hundreds of dollar more and have incorporated in their price is ludicrous. Both parts are the same price according to Intel's spec.

The hundreds of dollars more for the same config but 4710hq -> 4720hq would perhaps be a bug in the site that needs to be fixed.

LOL historically that has happened over and over. Most consumers see the bigger number and buy it simply because its better.
I mean think about the Graphics AMP and the cost. Sure its convenient but is the cost equal to its value? Heck no. -
On the alienware website of belgium (most likely also other European countries) the i7 4720HQ is only available with the the most expensive alienware configuration, which has the 980M only as gpu option. Though the laptop has as default CPU the i7-4710HQ. However, the 4720hq is a free upgrade choice.

So the first Alienware 17 R2 I ordered from Dell had an i7-4720HQ, even though the only option available when I ordered was the 4710HQ. The first one was ordered on May 8, but came with a bad keyboard. Got the replacement for that unit today. Happy to report that the keyboard on this replacement is just fine and that it has an i7-4720HQ as well:
Very happy with Dell so far for this free and unexpected upgrade. When I go to their site and enter the service tag number for both units, the site shows both units having the 4710HQ. -
Hey guys, I just took delivery ofmy Alienware 15. order listed the i7 4710HQ, but they sent me the 4720HQ. So feel free to order, looks they they ship those at no extra charge
-
I just have a check at Alienware NZ today, the i7 4710HQ no longer available to order, the 4720HQ is the only i7 available, more so is that, the price stay the same, so I guess they didnt actually charge any extra I guess.

The only place the price hasn't changed is with the pre-built quad model with 970M which was over priced in the first place at $2999
AW15 with i7-4720HQ out soon
