Alienware 17 r4
Tobii
GTX 1070 (Samsung mem)
6820HK
1080p monitor
repasted with conductonaught in February.
Never goes above 65C
Was not over clocked in BIOS
usually leave performance mode active for fan for cpu via bios.
igpu is always off.
Have never had a single problem with the computer. Until....
I was just sitting back playing wow when the screen went blue. Not the typical BSOD. Just blue .
Restart.
Now there are horizontal lines in 8 strips across the screen.
Right click and no GPU option.
updated driver...
Help please.
-
When reactivating igpu via fn+F7 the lines are gone.
Is the gtx 1070 cooked? -
Again, I repasted months ago and never see it get hot.
90% of the computers life is spent doing menial tasks it's way over qualified for. -

Always start with a hard reset of everything. Unplug, Remove both battery and bios battery and hold power button down for 10 seconds.
Clean off all the LM paste as best as humanly possible. Re-paste with Thermal Grizzly or something you have on hand. Reboot and hope for the best
Good luck brotherVasudev likes this. -
last time misjah did this, the computer still brokenPapusan likes this. -

Hmmmm... looks like the links to my images posted under the repastes threat have broken. I'll try to dig those up.
I did very carefully put down super 33+ tape, etc. With this being done 6 months ago it seems if there was going to be an issue I would have seen that by now.
At any rate I'll pull her apart and see what's going on.
If this was the case.... options? -

If it's cooked it's cooked. Don't use LM--that stuff isn't worth blowing up your hardware with to save a few C.
Whether you buy a new one, or manage to save the old one, try grizzly Kryonaut next time.
Why are you trying to REPASTE Again with LM if you fried it ?
Use regular grease. -
Welp
Just pulled her apart.
There is some spill over but the tape is still firmly in place right up to the die. I'll start peeling the tape back and see if anything made it under there. -
Yeah there is absolutely zero Liquid Metal that made it to where it shouldn't have. I made a point to video tape the removal of the tape.
-
A ball of it could of rolled off the tape and under the GPU hitting the connection points. That stuff never truly drys if balled up and can roll months later when the laptop is turned on its side or from a slight jolt, hence why I don't use it in a Laptop application. Bright side is if your still under warranty just get the M/B replaced. You get the right manager he will just ship you the system board with a return label for the old one.
-
I had the tape down to the PCB just because of something like that.
I inspected everything slowly and with detail. Nothing made it off of the tape. Nothing made it under the tape either. The LM was quite tough, I didn't goop it on there. This is one of 3 computers I have done this to and never an issue. I am 98% certain it wasn't the LM at this point.
The application took hours and hours to do and then a tear down the following week to inspect. Again all this was back in February. I pay a lot of attention to detail, annoyingly so to the people that know me.
At any rate I am cleaning it off. Lapping the heatsink again.
I did talk to someone in at tech support. They want to send someone out here to replace the mobo, but want to do the trouble shooting thing first. I told them I needed to grab some thermal paste from best buy quick to pop on there for the testing as I already did a tear down.
Then I'll grab Kryonaught and see how that performs with the new board. -
Please excuse the long winded post to follow this disclaimer statement!!!
Well I finally got around to it. Dell did send out another motherboard and a tech to replace it, great guy.... we nerded for a while. He worked on my computer while I was repairing someone elses. Lol
So I immediately checked the mem chips. They sent micron. My old mobo had Samsung
I decided to go with the kryonaut. Tried watched the guy put it on, without seeming like I am inspecting his work, and he did a great job.
I could not find all my fujilopy pads. So it is a mixture of his and my pads. I will order more. Maybe I need a better application, bench, inspection myself when I can because....
I haven't had a chance to run any benchmarks yet.... though I did have a chance to sit and play Destiny 2
Man oh man.... that gpu got up over 80 and I decided to scale back the graphics a bit. Though I'll add: everything maxed out in game and in the nvidia control panel looks nice and extremely good fps. Never below 60 except when conversations always seem @ 30, by design. Usually between 100 - 200. But hot.
*GPU fan performance mode is almost always active in bios. The noise doesn't bother me one bit and I've no reason not to let it run as cool as possible.
Sooooo.... going to run benches on that thread and see how it compares running exactly what they're benching with. Unless everyone is running Destiny 2 with maxed settings then I can't really compare my experience.
I will say this.... I really REALLY want to go the LM route again. We could say didn't learn lesson. But that's a narrow and uneducated statement. LM does cure, and a good 6 months of running without issue. It would have EASILY cured in that time. I had everything taped with super 33. Pictures posted in the repaste thread with fantastic results. Detailed, zoomed video removing tape with nothing having made its way under or off the tape. With the results, cure time, run time, OCD application of tape and compound, OCD removal and inspection post... I can say with 99% certainty it was not the LM that fried that GPU. Still.... that 1% has me hesitant.

If I can bother @iunlock.... I did search and noticed you tried out the kryonaut. You mentioned your gpu actually ran cooler?
Experience with kryonaut on a game such as Destiny 2 maxed in game and control panel? Again I have only run performance mode in bios for fan and cpu. No overclocking, no afterburner, no xtu. Just HWinfo.

6820hk
1070 micron .... on the phone with Dell I specifically stated I had Samsung mem and wanted the same on the new board.
Yada
Yada
Again... I have not put this through everything I did with my old mobo. But I definitely felt like I won the silicon lottery before and have not with my new board. Though I can't say that with any educated certainty yet.VICKYGAMEBOY likes this.
AW 17r4 .... screen/gpu.... went. Bonkers.
