On the dell support page - using my laptop's service tag - it says that my display is running on eDP 1.2.

Now it boggles my mind, this laptop is the revision that released in late 2015, while eDP 1.2 was released sometime in 2010, now why in the heck would Dell not use any of the newer versions of eDP?, i really can't think of a reason.

eDP you mean the internal panel?

Most likely there's no need to use a higher revision because you don't need more bandwidth or the extra features are unused for the equipped panels.

It really does not matter. It depends on the panel and cable used.
