    Hi all,

I just got my AW17R3 and I have an odd problem. It takes forever to boot. Upwards of a minute.

I have identified the cause to be the kionix free fall sensor. With it disabled in device manager, the system boots well under 10 seconds.

In fact, if I disable it in device manager and then re-enable it, it takes almost 30 seconds for device manager to recognize the change.

I don't particularly care about it as I use SSD devices but I'm trying to determine if it is a driver issue that can be fixed or if I have a defective unit. I'm very picky about these because I tend to keep them for less than a year and upgrade. If its defective, I want Dell to send another unit.

So my main question is, do other AW17 R3 users have this problem? My AW17 R2 does not have this probem.

If I'm the only one, then I will get Dell to fix it.

Here is what I have tried to see if I can get it working under any scenario. Every effort has ended with the same result. Again my R2 has no problem.

    1) Occurs with original HDD installed and original factory image intact (I actually noted the delay on the first boot of the new system)
    2) Occurs with Win10 installed on either of two different SSDs or the HDD; no difference
    3) Occurs in Win10 RTM Home and Win 10 RTM Pro
    4) Occurs in Win10 latest build 10547
    5) Occurs in Win8.1
    6) Occurs if I install every other driver on the sysem or if I install the Kionix driver first
    7) Tried Kionix free fall KXCNL driver from Windows 10 Update.
    8) Tried Kionix 1.1.2.8 driver package from dell.com
    9) Tried a slightly newer 1.1.3.0 driver package I also found from Dell.com
    10) Occurs whether or not i7-6820HK is overclocked or not
    11) SATA set to both AHCI and RAID
    12) Original BIOS A00 and the just released A02 BIOS on dell.com

So can any other AW 17 R3 owners tell me if they notice a boot difference with the free fall sensor driver enabled or disabled?

    Thanks so much,
    N

Congratulations on your new system, sorry I don't have any idea about your issue. If you don't mind answering in this thread, what screen did you opt for and it is a standard matte style, ie no glass bezel or does it have one?

I did the standard 1080p. It is matte, and it is very nice. My old AW17R2 had the glossy touch screen. They are technically the same panel (LGD0459) but I much prefer the matte.

My 17r3 boots very fast from a cold start or a restart in windows (like 10 seconds) I have noticed it boots very slow if I came from the bios, like a full minute or so. Not sure if that means anything just something I have noticed.

Thanks. I have contacted Dell and they are sending a replacement system. Tech support agreed it is not normal and sounds like a defective sensor on the motherboard.

Just a FYI, after flashing bios to A2 my boot times into windows got REALLY slow like your saying. I'm guessing its a bios issue that needs addressed in the new bios.

That's interesting. If you disable the Kionix free fall sensor in device manager, do your reboot times go back to normal?

I downgraded to A00 and the problem persists, can you try that?

I notice you mentioned A1 in another post; did you have A1 as opposed to A0 when you first got your system? I had A0 and upgraded to A2.

No it was a typo (trying to do do much at once LOL) It came with A0 and I flashed A2, I'm guessing there was no A1? I will test for you later if I can find time today, got a couple very busy days at work coming starting today.

Finally had a chance to check this for you and YES disabling the kionix free fall sensor put my boot times back to normal, When I have a minute I will flash back to AO bios and see if my speed is back with the kionix free fall sensor enabled again.

Thanks for testing that. We need to get the forums Dell rep to see this. Apparently the new bios breaks the sensor.

Good news! An update has appeared onWindows update today that fixes this. If you right click on the sensor in device manager and update driver and let it check online, it will install this new driver.

    Version 1.1.4.0 dated 9/17/15.

It resolves the slow booting problem!

That is weird, mine pulled it from the online update directly in device manager.

I just got my 17r3 and I'm having the same problem. I don't have ssd's (yet) so I really don't like the idea of leaving the fall sensor off, but I boot in 20-30 seconds with it off, compared to 60+ with it enabled. I'm thinking it's a driver problem rather than a batch of bad sensors. I was reading in the owners lounge someone has having lots of problems with thier new 17r3 and one of his symptoms was also really slow bootup

Dell has the newer 1.1.4.0 driver on their support site if for some reason you don't want to download it via Windows Update. It fixes this issue.

It actually doesn't fix the issue. Mine came with 1.1.4.0 driver and it has always had this problem. I tried repairing / removing / reinstalling. Still adds 60+ seconds to the boot. I've resorted to disabling the stupid thing.

I had the same issue with my AW 15 R2 came with older driver. I updated the driver via the dell website to 1.1.4.0 and still had problems. You need to go into control panel remove program, there is like 3 entrys you need to uninstall. after that go into device manager, click free fall sensor and uninstall ( select yes when asked to delete drivers) then install the 1.1.4.0 driver from dell. Reboot and see if fixed. Also please note, I still had a long boot 60 seconds after doing this because I disabled hibernation (powercfg -h off) make sure you have fast boot enabled in windows settings and also make sure that -h is on. When I had hibernation off it would slow down on the boot at different stages.

I confirm that the latest fix for Kionix, the boot is returned within 10 seconds.

As mentioned (Tony V), go in device manager and uninstall the sw selecting also be removed from the device, then apply the fix.

    ciao :)

Dang! I just spent 3 hour tracking this down to the freefall sensor. I wish I had found this sooner! :)

Hello, I have fast boot time after shutdown. But boot time when restarted is very slow. Did anybody experience this or know how to solve this?

Did you update your kionix free fall sensor driver? Boot from shutdown is faster because it uses windows fast boot features, restart doesnt. How many secs to boot and ssd or hdd?

    Yes updated sensor. Using hdd.
From shutdown: around 8-10 secs from bios to login
    From restart: around 1 minute

Try uninstalling free fall sensor from control panel first then from device manager, make sure check box to remove software when asked. Then restart without installing driver to see if still 1 minute

Did that and reinstalled latest version again. Now it's dropped to around 18 seconds. Thanks :)

I was having the same issue with slow booting. I just installed the driver and now it works it fine. 15 second boot. Just thought i would confirm this as a fix....at least for some
