The 1080 graphics score is pretty solid, I think its lower because of the cpu, but it shouldn't be a problem when gaming as the cpu shouldn't be using 100% of its power, its quite good for gaming.

I also think that is to the internal display.
The data has to travel back to the display down the AGA cable and it takes a small amount of the bandwidth to do that.

    How did you connect it?

Man looking at this, it will rape benches with the P870DM-G , lets see if i can get my hands on the Razer core.

looks like the best external case is the alienware amplifier ... the razer core is a bottleneck

Not really, and from what i have read, the Core is able to use more PCIe lanes than the AWA.

Its a hardcore bottle neck because of the ****ty processors. Both the AW's and the Stealth. But way more on the piece of **** Stealth.

dont forget that is a benchmark ... sometimes benchmarks and gaming doesnt have sense .... i would like to see gaming performance with numbers obviusly.
and you need to admit it, AWA win this time. more cheaper and looks good

No offense but, im not really a fan of Alienwares, i had one the worst laptop i have every owned, and sent it back after 10 days.

The only thing im actually interested in is the Core Over TB3.

Main thing is that if the 1080 can do that score using a crippled processor, i would love to try it using a desktop processor on one of the other machines.

Obviously no offense intended. If it works for you, then awesome!

ok, you have your reasons, but i am a happy owner ... you have right, but the perfect notebook dont exist ... not to me. but preferring razer above alienware ?
razer is known for being expensive and 0 parts to fix something. I dont want to offend you, but you should wait for the new "asus core" that was showed on the computex, you will see it soon.

and looks like you have an expensive notebook. I do not want make you feel depressed, but new gtx 1080 and 1070 notebooks are comming with 120Hz panels and mechanical keyboard.
An example, the new Asus GX800, and the new msi notebooks

Nope the AWA has more bandwidth available because it is a direct 4X pci express port and a separate USB hub. Thunderbolt runs on 4X but has to translate PCI express data to thunderbolt data. Also the USB hub on for example on the core is running on the same thunderbolt channel.

AGA is proprietary BUT it is more solid.

The 6700HQ CPU is fine for gaming by the way. I run the latest and heaviest games and it never even reaches 60% of full load in current games and then I am really pushing it with a lot of background apps such as photoshop open.

The HK series are almost as fast as a desktop 6700K so I dont get the remark about ****ty processors to be honest.

Never did i say i prefer the Razer over Alienwares.
Dont really understand the need for mechanical keyboards in Notebooks. I already have a proper full size keyboard and dont plan on using the inbuilt keyboards anytime in the near future.
Same for the high refresh rate panel, cant freaking game on a 17-18 inch display after using a full 144hz IPS 27 or 24 inch display.
And why would i be depressed, my FHD panel can do 110Hz and those new GPU's will easily fit in my current machine lol.

But hey, im glad Alienware works better, good for the users

But where is the headroom ? I dont just play games, i use my machine for work as well, and the HK processor cant do anything in terms of extended heavy loads. For example i use my machine for rendering and doing CG simulations work, i tried it on an overclocked processor with a lapped heat sink and CLU applied, and the system couldn't handle the load for more than 6 hours.

I am using my machine for heavy rendering work as well and it has done since day one, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. It is being used, it never throttled, it always performed.

Constant photoshopping, while for example Premiere or cinema 4D is rendering on the background. It never goes under the full turbo boost clockspeed. Until I close all apps and the laptop goes in idle mode.

I would love to have you test a few things out. But this argument will be endless. I had an alien ware 18 , worst thing I ever owned. Thought I'll give a friend's newest one a shot, didn't quite work out either.
And type of loads matter a lot.

Mine look like this - Hi Res Houdini Sims + Mantra Renders.
Maya Vray renders sometimes going into extended periods like 2days back to back.
But either ways, I'm glad it's working for you, it didn't for me.
Really want to keep this thread on topic , my original post was just inquiring about what sysrem/interface the bench was ran on.
Not sure why you guys like to argue so much about these things.

I'm still incredibly underwhelmed with the AGA/1080 combo.

Desktop installs are in the ~19k-20k range. AGA is proving to be a serious bottleneck.

    My AW17 R2 + AGA/980Ti gets a 14.1k

I think we should be considering the graphics score only, since the CPU performance has a significant impact on the total score. So, there is not much bottleneck when we look at the way I propose.

    Not so much...I have a 4980HQ (9726) vs a 6700HQ (9409).

The graphics scores are only 12% apart. The desktop parts are 30+% apart.

The calculation system of 3dmark should explain this.
Here is my result with the 980Ti Overclocked: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8467850
Here is my result with the 1080 Overclocked: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8662045
As you can see the only difference is the graphic score, which is roughly 20%. However, the total score only increased by 7%. The total score of 19-20K you saw is achieved with the 5960X, which doubles the physic score to over 20000.

20% difference between the 1080 and 980ti on the desktop as well. So the AGA works as advertised.

That core will be marginally better. The TB3 bandwidth of the core is 5GB/s total and the AGA is 4GB/s. To use either on the internal display will use some bandwidth.
As of now the core is $330 more then the AGA for a 1GB/s.
The AGA also has dedicated PCIE which is not shared with the USB.
If you use the USB, ethernet port, etc on the Core it will further reduce the bandwidth.
The AGA can use all of the ports with out a reduction of the bandwidth at all.

Plus not to mention manufacturers need to enable XConnect to allow the use of the Core. I cannot imagine Dell would enable this considering they sell a competing product.

The THunderbolt protocol needs to translate the PCI express signals to thunderbolt. This causes massive overhead. In the end it will always be slower.

It does work on the Alienware and Dell laptops though. But it disconnects from time to time. Probably drivers or bios issue.
