AW 15 R3 Screen Upgrade options (non G-Sync)

I currently have the AW 15 R3 with 6820HK and 1070. I have the 60 Hz UHD IPS Screen and am very interested to know what options I have for a higher refresh rate. Ideally, I would be looking at 120/144 Hz 1440p but I really do not know what is out there on the market (or what will work in this laptop).

I do NOT have G-Sync (uses a different motherboard to route the display differently). Do the G-Sync screens still cable up to a non-G-sync motherboard? Are the eDP cables the same? I have a lot to learn here.

I have not taken the laptop apart yet but from what I can tell my starting state is this: LQ156D1 screen with 40-pin eDP with 4 lanes.

One candidate screen that I can otherwise find no info about is the 15.6" FHD 144 Hz screen in the new 15" Razer Blade (LGD05C0). It has great color accuracy and the refresh rate is obviously 144 Hz but I can't find anything about it online. Here is the readout from HWinfo64 on aforementioned Blade laptop. I picked up one to compare to my AW 15 but am thinking if I just upgrade the screen on my current laptop that would keep me plenty happy for the near future.

 

Got another awesome tidbit of info, the magical and awesome screen in my Razer Blade 15.6" is a 40 pin eDP connector! I heard someone saying in another thread that it is also IPS as well as 144 Hz. This is THE screen.

Would it be safe to try plugging the Blade screen into my AW 15 without removing anything, just moving the cable across as much as slack will allow while keeping the screen installed on the Blade. Just to see if it will work?

 

Well, I boldly decided to try the screen swap just because I could. It was very easy to remove the Razer Blade 15.6" lid completely and plug the eDP cable into the slot on the AW 15 which is also easily accessible. When I powered up the AW 15 I got a nice melodic song and then a 3-2-1 beep code. Assuming that meant no dice, I put everything back together the way it was originally. The AW 15 came back up with the UHD screen plugged in no problem like nothing ever happened. The Blade however had a backlight on the screen but no other signal that I could tell - somewhere some wires got crossed and the screen may be damaged? So the Blade is going back to the store tomorrow (still in my return window - very well may just be that the connector came lose inside the lid where I didn't want to go, it is a weird design where the ribbon is externally exposed in the hinge) but now we at least have that datapoint. I really hope it was just the cables and the screen can work because it is a fantastic screen!!

 

Hello, I came across this post and wanted to ask a few questions. I've been looking into whether I can replace the Omen 15's 60Hz 1080p display with a 144Hz one once I get it. The problem is, the 60Hz display comes with a 30 pin connector. If I buy a 144Hz panel (the LGD05C0, which is what brought me to this thread) would buying a 40 pin connector, if I can find one, allow me to connect the display and have it working? I see you at least managed to connect the cable, so does that mean that the eDP socket accepts both 30 pin and 40 pin cables?

 

Then you should post on the Omen forum, not dig up a zombie Alienware thread. I have no idea how the cabling is set up for Omens.

 

My question isn't about 'how the cabling is set up' in Omens, just about how eDP is implemented in laptop motherboards. I didn't realize this was an old thread. Still, I only asked here because I wanted to know what OP ended up doing and what he learnt.

 

Again, you're in the wrong forum (which should be obvious). On Alienwares one can replace a 30pin with a 40pin cable but, again, I have no idea about Omen cabling and what is possible. So, yes, your question is very much about Omen screen cabling.

eDP & logic board cabling in Alienware /=/ eDP & logic board cabling in HP Omen. I have no idea how changing cables (if possible) would impact Tobii / Windows Hello in an Omen. I have no idea if there's any other limitations such as EDID.

But, by all means, keep trying to explain why a screen replacement issue with an Omen belongs on the Alienware forum.

 

While the screens are standardized, how they are cabled to the motherboard will be OEM and model specific so you will be better suited in an Omen specific thread. Even when you are connecting a 40-pin screen to a 40-pin cable (as I was in this case) it is not guaranteed to work.

 

Mehh have conflicting feelings abotu this though, you kinda ruined a laptop and ship it back.....

The testing is valuable, but it kinda sucks for the people that have to deal with goods like this.

 

It was going back anyways, and only the screen is impacted. And I did purchase the protection plan on it.

But, ya, not my proudest moment.

 

Another possible contender for a good 144 Hz IPS upgrade to the 15r3 could be the AUO80ED which is the same panel used in the new m15. Anyone smarter than me have any thoughts on compatibility?
