I would take it as a rumor until we have something more concrete. But, Frank Azor who used to work for Alienware now works at AMD. So it would make sense he’d try to use his influence and ties with his old company to sell AMD products. We’re in a very experimental stage of AMD making a come back to the mobile space. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened.

HOWEVER I’d tread lightly. ALOT of people are openly jumping band wagons to the AMD side long before we see any actual products. While AMD is making a huge splash on the Desktop side of things they did not just do this over night. It took them a few generations of Ryzen before they had something that ACTUALLY competed with intel. There was a lot of bugs and learning that was done to get to where they are now. So once we start seeing more Ryzen and AMD gpu laptops remember they’re basically at square one with laptops. There will be bugs, errors, and gotchas. Plus Msi after burner, Inter XTU, and Throttle stop WILL NOT work. So what you get is what you get. You will not be able to tweak things to the extent of Intel or Nvidia.

I’m not saying don’t be excited if this happens. We need AMD to be competitive. Nvidia has drastically increased their price because they literally have no competition. AMD’s current offerings are honestly not that good on the GPU side of things. They have a lot of ground to cover. But, if they can close the gap like they have with Intel then it will benefit us all. But, I’ll be waiting until a gen 2 or even gen 3 of an AMD gpu laptop because what I see currently doesn’t impress me.

Unless the Alienware UFO has an AMD cpu and apu. Then I’d jump on board with that in a heart beat. :)

No Throttlestop sucks, but at least there is the Ryzen Master I guess, and all Ryzen CPUs are unlocked. AMD GPUs are meh, but there would be some pretty sick Ryzen options for the 51M.

I agree Intel XTU does not hold a candle to Throttle Stop. But, people do use it. And I do agree the DTR laptops that are getting the Desktop Ryzen CPU's are in a much better position. But, the mobile ryzen CPU's are going to be disappointing. Intel is still gonna be king on the laptop side of things for the time being. Just alot of people are prematurely celebrating AMD's victory and they're long from being ready to compete. Like I said I can't wait for them to be competitive. My first Alienware laptop was an AMD GPU Alienware 17. I'd love to see that again.

Sorry, I meant "no Throttlestop sucks". I hate XTU and luckily there is no reason to use it.

I don't actually have any experience with Ryzen, but at 105W TDP the 3900X might work? 50% faster than 9900K in MT benchmarks.

All the desktop Ryzen CPUs are, but the mobile ones are locked (at least for the U-series CPUs; don't know about the H-series).
EDIT: Did some research. H-series are also locked.

Eh. It’s been working for me. Up until my return to this forums I was strictly a desktop gamer. Still mostly am. And I would love to have bios control of my laptop to make changes. XTU has been unstable for me at best. Throttle Stop while not perfect is better than nothing. With manufacturers pumping more voltage into CPUs than they need and those like Alienware, Msi, etc using terribly small heat sinks to cool their machines you kinda have to undervolt. So it’s as close to a set and forget it kind of thing as you can get these days. And not having it is asking a lot. So AMD better have some good tweaking tools in the works so I can dial it in and have it run the way I want.

I swore I read somewhere that 3700X is going to be the go to for these DTR coming out? I’m sure you could put something more powerful after the fact. We will have to see. I only passingly paid attention to Ryzen in the last for years. But, next time I upgrade my motherboard I’ll likely go AMD. So once the 4000 series is out I’ll look into it. Still using my trusty 8700K with no hiccups. :)

Yeah, so AMD has this CPU tuning app called Ryzen Master which does offer some static voltage control. How this Ryzen undervolting works in practice and whether it's really needed in order to maximise CPU performance is an open question for me. It's conceivable that the CPU is tuned automatically so that there is no benefit to manual tweaking (unlike with Intel CPUs, when undervolting is a standard mandatory step these days).

The performance is pitiful. Significantly less than an RTX 2060 and slightly under 1060 performance (but within a normal margin of error). Not remarkably better than 980M performance. The Ryzen mobile CPU performance is also pathetic. Being excited about this doesn't make much sense to me. What's the draw here? Simply hate for Intel and NVIDIA? Bear in mind, my own turdbook's Time Spy score in the comparison is certainly nothing to be particularly excited about, even though it's utterly destroying the AMD-powered product. The comparisons are the top scores for each configuration, so "normal" will be something less. All have clock-blocked CPUs except the antique model with the lowest score.

From the article... "it looks like Dell is looking to lower the price points on its mid-range variants. 5600M and 5700M models may also be in the cards" This is nothing to get so excited about. This smells as Dell try go cheaper. This is nothing more than offer "less performing hardware".

Whatever I buy in any shops, I'll get what I pay for. Nothing more or less. Pay less... Get less.

Any chance we see 105W Ryzens in Clevos or 51M?

I would love to see AMD return to Dell, competition is a good thing. Anyone who doesn't think so has their head stuck in the sand IMHO (14nm++++++++++ anyone). The new 4k series AMD CPUs would likely be a welcomed addition, as would the 5700M. AMD does need to get Ryzen master working on their mobile CPUs though (it doesn't currently work on them), and there is no way to actually undervolt their mobile CPUs.

I am not sure. If there is money to be made then chances are we will. That seems to be the only thing that really matters to the companies that manufacture laptops.

Yes we definitely need competition. But we need it in all performance tiers. Competing only for low end budget hardware kind of sucks unless that is all you want. AMD is finally pushing the envelope on desktop CPUs. Not very much on mobile CPU or on the desktop or mobile GPU front. I would be sad to see people settle for less to support a brand that is content to offer less.

With their 7nm mobile chips coming out and the possibility of a 5700m, I don't see how that's not an attempt at competing on higher end tiers.

I guess we will need to see how it performs. If it is less than 2070 level it still falls below middle range. The also need to lighten up on clock blocking things if they want to be taken seriously. I hope they do because the need for serious competition is undeniable.

If AMD only will be able to come on par with Intel chips from last year so isn't this much to be happy about. At least if we talk about performance uplift.

For the GPU performance I can't see AMD will be able to compete at all in lang time. Nvidia will push down any attempt from AMD. What they will be able to offer is less performance at a cheaper price point.
Still nice seeing AMD up against Intel and Nvidia for the first time in long time for notebooks.

Intel hasn't had any real increases in CPU performance since skylake, just more cores. This is what happens when there is no competition. I am glad to see AMD dominating the Time Spy Extreme CPU scores, seems like a positive push to me. I am hopeful having a 7nm variant in the laptop will be a good benefit as well.
