ALIENWARE still a joke? NO IPS gsync only TN gsync ,and OPTIMUS means no 120hz output

I STILL DONT get it,year after year i keep waiting for alienware to fix their issues coz i like the brand, but it just seems that each time they release a new one, they take out things that people liked in the previous one.for instance the old alienware 2014 had neon lights on the front, this one has neon lights only on the sides.seriously tell me which customer or which design engineer would tell that neon lights on the front of this 2014 alienware looked bad and decided to remove it? for most people it looked dam gorgeous. alienware ceo and engineers are retards. next joke is that they offer full hd ips panel but without gsync, but at the same time they can offer full hd TN panel with gysnc?? hahhaah what a joke why not ips with gsync? i have used an ips panel and im never going back to TN and dont force me to do it,give me the damn options!! going back to TN from ips is like going back from 4k to 480p,ips looks somuch better.all other manufacturers can give full hd ips panel with gysnc and also 4k ips panel with gysnc .basically these manufacturers give options so customers with different budget levels can buy them. BUT alienware cant!! they cant even give options.dont tell me that they do this to keep the costs down, thats a stupid point ,then they can offer one with high cost and g sync and one with low cost and no gsync, why cant they do that.why cant they offer options? i used to like having a bluray writer, now they took that away aswell!!! please dont tell me the world is digital no disks are used !!,fine!! then why dont you offer an option with or without bluray drives? asus rog can offer it, alienware cant. seriiously idk how the alienware retard ceo can think they are making the ultimate gaming laptop when it lacks so many features..i would give that name to asus, coz they offer all those features i want including no ****ty optimus technology .dont tell me optimus is good. if u think it is good please show me a video of getting nvidia 3dtv play to work for games on an optimus alienware laptop.120hz active 3d output simply cant work on an optimus laptop nor can an optimus laptop output 120hz becoz optimus crap limits to 60hz and has thousands of issues like older games not being able to detect ur main gpu despite forcing the game to run with nvidia.an example of this is gta 4 ,no matter what you do ,the game will only detect your intel gpu.ive tried every possible thing to no avail. alienware this year with all these issues yet again like the past few years and still left unfixed makes me re-think my decision of whether to buy it this time or not.they fixed things i needed like gsync this time as the last years alienware did not have gsync but this year they added it but made it a deal breaker that some people wouldnt buy it, ie: offering gsync only with tn panel but not the ips counterpart.

That big wall of text is terribly difficult to read. People who own the 60Hz 1080p panel have said that they've been able to overclock it to around 100Hz. Is Asus offering a 120Hz IPS panel? Wasn't aware that they were.

alienware have been going down hill the last few years

as of now I keep going back to my alienware 17

the 2013 model has so much more options compared to my alienware 17 r4

the 2013 had 3 hard drives a Blu-ray burner hdmi IN/out 4 ram slots more usb ports easer to tear apart

the track pad is night in day the 2013 track pad is so much better if I knew for sure the cables would fit I would switch them out

intel piece of dogpoop doesn't support 120hz, it's not alienware's fault. the non gsync can toggle optimus on or off, so if you want that functionality you should opt for the non gsync screen. in my opinion, gsync doesn't make much of a difference for this laptop, these laptops are powerful enough to run games on QHD on ultra details pushing over 60fps

the only 120hz screen available for 17" laptops are TN screens, even the 120Hz MSi chimei is TN (and is not QHD, is FHD)

Well said. I think the fingers are getting pointed in the wrong direction. Also, you're absolutely right about these laptops...with frame rates up in the 150's and 200's (on 1080p), gsync wouldn't really do much justice in most scenarios.... @Dee X will be testing this out in depth so there's some good info to come.

Here's the thing...gsync or not, there are people who play at even 60fps w/o gsync (which is a no go for me as 100fps is my bare minimum / threshold...ie..100fps is my 60fps...) that will 'skooolll' players and top the rounds in a FPS game.

Gsync is more of a personal preference IMO as it does not necessarily do much justice if at all when you're already pushing 150fps - 200fps.

Does it have a purpose? Yes, but does it make a real world difference in systems packed with a GTX 1070 or 1080? Not really.

To each his own, but personally I don't use gsync, because I don't feel the need for it. I'm already maxing out my frames in my FPS so what's the point?

gsync is just vesa adaptive sync, aka freesync that nvidia is so reluctant to support (so they can sell the gsync monitors for more)

It is useful for preventing screen tearing at least. That's why I use it. Not a fan of vsync lag.

Indeed pointing the fingers in the wrong direction. Blame the screen manufacturers for this and not alienware. also the looks are subjective. if you dont like m, dont buy m.

This is why i like gsync as well. just to remove the tearing.

u might be right about subjective but there are some things many people will0 agree it is good.this neon lights removed from the front and the looked much better to almost anyone i asked the question.to a normal person it appears better thaan when they removed it from the front.u said if i dont like them to not buy them.yes u r right i wont buy things i dont like but the issue here is i like the alienware brandname and waiting every year for them to improve coz i love to buy their laptop for the name and looks but each year they make it worse and the sacrifices are not worth it so i wont buy.no ips gsync fhd,no optical driver and the crap optimus

That you love the front lights doesnt mean everyone does.

And these laptops do come with optimus switches, you can turn it off. only the gsync version comes without. and all the 120hz gsync laptop panels are TN. there is not alternative available yet.

    OP,

I think I get what your frustrations are but I think you didn't use the best examples. I have still in my collection an Alienware m18xR1 and the 2013 Alienware 18. I did a big pictured comparo when the 18 first came out on these forums. There were definite tradeoffs with the aesthetics. The backside lighting definitely got the nod and the overall lighting was nice but way more subdued. The aesthetics of the x18xR1 Nebula Red from 2011 had the front grill that resembles the grill of a lambo Murci with the lights that came out and was indeed awesome and aggressive. Who knows why the design changed in the way that it did. At the time, it was suspected that it was AW finally starting to become a very mainstream quantity based gaming system.

And that's really the reality and isn't worth going over every point regarding monitor, etc. Honesetly back in 2006 when I got a custom ALX system it used the BEST components one could get. The Nvidia 6700 Ultras were BFG, the ram was tier 1 all the way down to the power supply. The system was benched and the results were shown along with me getting personal phone calls updating me on the status of my order and if there was any specific game I would like installed or benched. AW was a very niche gaming company that became very popular quickly. When Dell absorbed it, it was only a matter of time before the focus shifted to a different business operating model.

As of now, mobile gaming is growing and getting much more popular. In my opinion, NOW is a great time for a company to emerge that offers that level of concierge service. The trade off is going to be the pricing. We paid MUCH MORE years ago for the gaming rigs than we do now so a benefit of having Dell's products is pricing. If you are wanting the best of the best and upgrade paths with A1 tech support and concierge service then you have to go with a boutique dealer/vendor.

I'm definitely not happy with Dell this go around and this is not my best OR worst purchase from them. However I find it one of the most aesthetic notebooks I have ever owned. The lighting is fantastic overall as is the build quality.

I have a 2014 Viper TA and it's the best sports car I have owned. However if you go to the viper forums you will see some people so upset because there is an inherent defect with the motor (some are pron to spinning a bearing). For most, it doesn't take away that it's the best viper ever made and the pinnacle of track driving outside of cars that cost a million or more. This AW 17 is really one of the best notebooks ever made if you get around the defect from the factory and make it your own beast. I spend a lot of time on my three hobbies (gaming, cars, and watches) when I am not working so I wouldn't sweat the small stuff. Find the best of what you want and can afford and then analyse the costs and benefits of ownership. Once you decide pull the trigger and have fun without regret. Once I figured this system out and what needed to be fixed I bought it and haven't looked back. The screen is fine, I don't even seem to have the banding isssues, I reinserted my screen to fix the light bleed and now have a near perfect screen. I repasted and have acceptable gaming temps. So I wrote all this because I hear you but I think you are reminiscing to a different time with a different business model in play and you have to accept the changes or move on to a different company. Good luck.

I like to drive my cars and not have them drive me. The gtr is great technologically but the steering is numb and the experience on track falls flat. They are great for 1/4 mile times though. I don't find them attractive either. I did cross shop them but ultimately decided it didn't fit my purposes. Outside of a lambo huracan and aventador there are very few cars that make a gen V Viper disappear in the crowd and even fewer that beat their track times. The z06 is fast but only for a lap or two due to the super charger heat soak.

OP needs to understand that it's hard for a lot of IPS laptop displays to pass Nvidia's G-Sync certification. Clevo couldn't get the 1080p/120Hz IPS passed because of the refresh being so poor. We don't even have low response time 60Hz IPS in laptops yet.

So the only 120Hz G-Sync options are TN panels, for right now.

Cause the IPS panel have 20-25ms response time.
