I have a R1 Alienware 13 and have been using it for the last 9-10 months with two external monitors - one hooked up to the HDMI port and the other to the display port (and then a VGA adapter). This setup has been fine for me, and using two external displays is one of the reasons I got the A13 in the first place. Anyway, I upgraded to Windows 10 and around the same time (not immediately) my second monitor stopped working. After futzing with it a bit, it seemed like the display port had stopped working (connecting it to other monitors worked only sometimes, other monitor worked fine with another computer). I called Dell and, after a series of other incredibly time-consuming and ultimately pointless attempts to delete/reinstall drivers etc, they replaced the motherboard, but still the second monitor isn't working. When I talked to Dell originally they said that the A13 officially only supported one external monitor which I thought was kinda stupid since I was running it just fine with two. Anyway, now I'm thinking that the updated windows 10 drivers from Nvidia are what's behind the problem.
Has anyone else had problems running multiple monitors under Windows 10?

Update: Dell has sent me a new computer, actually upgraded from the previous system I had (yay!) but I still can't get the second monitor to work. This is really bumming me out. Anyone out there able to use two monitors with the two ports on the A13 and Windows 10? Is this a driver issue?

Have you tried reinstalling the Intel Graphics drivers? Or at least updating them? To do this, you have to uninstall both your current Nvidia and Intel GPU drivers.
The Nvidia driver can't be the cause since the Nvidia GPU is a render only GPU, and the iGPU is the display GPU of the laptop (meaning every monitor you connect uses the Intel GPU / iGPU). SO it's possible the Intel Graphics Driver is not doing its job. -
Unless someone responds before I get home, I will hook mine up to two displays and report back. I think I have everything I need to connect to DP, HDMI, VGA and about any mix of them.
*Edit*
My Win 10 R1 works fine with a DP 4k @60 and HDMI 4k @30 and the internal all on at the same time. I didn't have to make any changes, I plugged them both in and they came on by themselves in the extended desktop mode. I'm running the intel drivers from MS update I beleive (because when I tried the AW ones I got a message saying they were older than the ones I had already), and 358.50 Nvidia drivers not that those matter I'm sure.
I'm sure you already checked everything, but if not, I would check both displays you have with another working machine that you know can display 2 screens at once (almost any desktop or laptop would do). Also try another set of cables, as I have seen cables go bad or just not like certain connections on a machine.
You should definitely get all 3 screens to work without any issue at all.Last edited: Oct 12, 2015 -
