Does anyone here know how to make the 980m output 144Hz to an external monitor? Whenever I connect my monitor via displayport, it defaults to 59Hz. I can go into intel control panel and adjust the refresh rate but even then, it only let's me go up to 120Hz. Also, it will not let me change the refresh rate to 120 and keep my external monitor as my main display. When I change it, it automatically makes the AW screen the main display. The only way I can game @ 120Hz is to turn off the AW screen and output solely to the external display. That's better than nothing but still, I'd like to go up to 144Hz if possible. BTW, this is the monitor that I'm using:

I think it's the NVIDIA Control Panel that you should be change it from, because when you plug the external monitor, you're actually plug straight to the 980M, which control by the NVIDIA control panel, It should be the same with every monitor.

For me, It's look like this:

One more thing, it's only work if you use the DisplayPort v1.2 or higher, HDMI dont go over 60Hz while DP can support up to 4K at 60Hz.

Yeah... I don't think this is possible. The iGPU is the display adapter for the laptop's panel and any external monitor connected straight from the laptop. The 980m is juts a render-only GPU, a GPU that does the legwork. Unless the Intel HD 4600 has 144Hz support at 1080p, that's the best you can get. The Nvidia Control Panel settings are limited when using the mobile GPU.

Dam you said exactly what I was expecting even though I was hoping someone here had a solution. It sucks because I read about other laptops with the same GPU using features like gsync and 144Hz but we're locked out of those features because of the hardware.

I don't get any of those options when I hook up an external display. All I get is 3 options and the Nvidia Control panel is very barebones.

I have my AW with the 980M hooked up via HDMI for now to my Samsung 4K monitor and it only allows me to go 30Hz. Totally sucks....

I'm assuming getting a mini Display port adapter for the USB C port on the AW is the only way to achieve 60Hz eh?

Is it possible via usb type c? The only reason why i am considering another brand is because of this issue

The newer laptops with an Nvidia GPU have HDMI 2.0, so UHD@60 is possible with them through HDMI.
As for the Thunderbolt 3 port, it can do what mini DP can already do.

UHD at 60Hz is only possible on the laptops 4k screen.

When I'm connected to my 4k monitor via HDMI, I can only select 30Hz max...

    Any ideas?

Key word: USB. I said HDMI, not USB. If you're talking about the USB C port, then it's either the driver of said port or your adapter.
And HDMI 2.0 is separate from the laptop's display resolution.
Still iGPU, but I don't know about 144 Hz. Depends if the iGPU supports and if the monitor supports it through HDMI.

Correction on my part....I meant HDMI....

I'm plugged into the AW HDMI to my 4k monitor, yet only able to achieve 30Hz max.

Most adapters I've seen (USB C to MiniDisplayport) all state a max of 30Hz at 4k...

I'm a bit confused...how can I achieve 4k on my external Samsung monitor?

    Thanks.

Try updating your Intel Graphics driver.
But if I may ask, does your cable support HDMI 2.0?

    Hi iunlock,

Does your 4k samsung monitor have HDMI 2.0? HDMI 1.4 is limited to 30hz at 4k.

Also, it is my understanding that all high speed HDMI cables are the same. There is no HDMI 2.0 cable spec, but one would require "High Speed HDMI cables" to achieve the highest resolution and refresh rates available over the HDMI 2.0 interface. These cables have been the norm for quite some time now, way before HDMI 2.0 became a going concern. So if there is an issue, it's most likely your monitor does not have HDMI 2.0.

    Update:

It was my silly HDMI cord. The strange thing is, the HDMI cable says 2.0, but I guess it was faulty. Down in the rubbish it went...

So I used another HDMI 2.0 cable and violla....

    Monitor is HDMI 2.0 :)

    Thanks for the input.

Good evening , so I have had the same question in the past and this is what I have and how I got everything to work , to start off my labtop is a msi gt 72s dominator pro g with a gtx 980m 8 gig version of vram , 64 gigs of ram and 1 terabyte of SSD . I bought a dell G sync monitor with 144hz refresh rate . It's a qhd screen . One you need a mini display port as the dominator only uses a mini port to make display port . Second make sure you go to nivada display options and you need to disable the labtop screen to have only external screen on and make sure you choose 144 hz refresh rate . The problem is some games will automatically choose the highest resolution in order to achieve the refresh rate thus making some games performance suck . Really depends on the game and what settings you use . If you choose optimal settings the refresh rate will go down and resolution back to 1920 by 1080 . So to answer your question yes it's possible . And I have pictures and videos of my labtop running gears of war 4 on high settings at 60 frames per second with a refresh rate of 144. Also you have to have games for frames per second unlocked to really see any difference .

Unfortunately in practice this is often not the case. More so than not. Hdmi cables fail to work on higher framerates with resolutions higher than fullhd.

Yes it is HDMI 2.0 and it achieves 61Hz at 4K.

The whole thing with the cables is goofy isn't it? I just bought HDMI 2.0 rated cables to be safe.

Note: I did have HDMI 1.4 cables and they did not allow 60-61Hz.
