Does anyone here know how to make the 980m output 144Hz to an external monitor? Whenever I connect my monitor via displayport, it defaults to 59Hz. I can go into intel control panel and adjust the refresh rate but even then, it only let's me go up to 120Hz. Also, it will not let me change the refresh rate to 120 and keep my external monitor as my main display. When I change it, it automatically makes the AW screen the main display. The only way I can game @ 120Hz is to turn off the AW screen and output solely to the external display. That's better than nothing but still, I'd like to go up to 144Hz if possible. BTW, this is the monitor that I'm using:

I think it's the NVIDIA Control Panel that you should be change it from, because when you plug the external monitor, you're actually plug straight to the 980M, which control by the NVIDIA control panel, It should be the same with every monitor.
For me, It's look like this:

One more thing, it's only work if you use the DisplayPort v1.2 or higher, HDMI dont go over 60Hz while DP can support up to 4K at 60Hz.Last edited: Apr 14, 2015 -
Yeah... I don't think this is possible. The iGPU is the display adapter for the laptop's panel and any external monitor connected straight from the laptop. The 980m is juts a render-only GPU, a GPU that does the legwork. Unless the Intel HD 4600 has 144Hz support at 1080p, that's the best you can get. The Nvidia Control Panel settings are limited when using the mobile GPU.

I'm assuming getting a mini Display port adapter for the USB C port on the AW is the only way to achieve 60Hz eh? -
Is it possible via usb type c? The only reason why i am considering another brand is because of this issue

As for the Thunderbolt 3 port, it can do what mini DP can already do.jpsm likes this. -

When I'm connected to my 4k monitor via HDMI, I can only select 30Hz max...
Any ideas?

And HDMI 2.0 is separate from the laptop's display resolution.

I'm plugged into the AW HDMI to my 4k monitor, yet only able to achieve 30Hz max.
Most adapters I've seen (USB C to MiniDisplayport) all state a max of 30Hz at 4k...
I'm a bit confused...how can I achieve 4k on my external Samsung monitor?
Thanks.

But if I may ask, does your cable support HDMI 2.0?Last edited: Jan 30, 2016 -
Hi iunlock,
Does your 4k samsung monitor have HDMI 2.0? HDMI 1.4 is limited to 30hz at 4k.
Also, it is my understanding that all high speed HDMI cables are the same. There is no HDMI 2.0 cable spec, but one would require "High Speed HDMI cables" to achieve the highest resolution and refresh rates available over the HDMI 2.0 interface. These cables have been the norm for quite some time now, way before HDMI 2.0 became a going concern. So if there is an issue, it's most likely your monitor does not have HDMI 2.0.

It was my silly HDMI cord. The strange thing is, the HDMI cable says 2.0, but I guess it was faulty. Down in the rubbish it went...
So I used another HDMI 2.0 cable and violla....
Monitor is HDMI 2.0
Thanks for the input. -

The whole thing with the cables is goofy isn't it? I just bought HDMI 2.0 rated cables to be safe.
Note: I did have HDMI 1.4 cables and they did not allow 60-61Hz.
980m and 144Hz output
