what do you mean processed? They "processed" my refund yesterday, but I still don't see the funds yet. I got like a new order with -$$$ so I will give it a couple days then call them again.

Good questions, but frankly, this is a bit of a thread hijack. This one is dedicated to the issue of people ordering 8GB 980M config and Dell pushing 4GB units to them instead. Can you start a new one to avoid confusion and chaos? :)

To put people's mind at ease. I received my refund for my first returned laptop in 5 working day after they collected. I just received my 10% compensation refund and that took 9 working days.

    Finally!!!

I got my refund in the bank today.

Let's recap some dates :) Remember. There are 3 laptops here.

10/23/15 (1st order made over the phone for 4GB unit)
    11/10/15 (received 1st unit 4GB machine)
11/13/15 (noticed they upgraded to 8GB units and wanted that instead)
    11/15/15 (started return process)
11/15/15 (New order placed for 8GB unit EDD 12/7 [got delayed] 2nd machine)
11/20/15 (sent return out the door)
11/24/15 (Dell has my original return in hands)
    ..... 12/15/15 (New order received (Wrong unit - 4GB instead of 8GB)
..... 12/18/15 (Started exchange process order 3rd machine)
    ..... 12/30/15 (Exchange received w/ 8GB)
    ..... 01/06/16 (Returned the wrong 4GB unit)
    1/13/16 (refund in my account)

Overall, not too bad when looking back at the dates. The worst part of it was not knowing how long things will take. Most of the dates were unknowns until items shipped. My exchange had N/A for the EDD and my 8GB order EDD got delayed. The refund took the full 30 business days (beware). I had thought they forgot about me.

Well, glad to see the saga is over for you, however, let's face the facts:

2 months refund wait is unacceptable.
Selling 980M 8GB they are unable to deliver to some customers is unacceptable.
The 220 nits FHD panel is unacceptable.

To be clear though, if you look at the days (depending what you remove for the holidays), Jan 11th (which is when they said they initiated the refund, not when it was in my bank) is actually 30 business from when they received it; on the nose. So, I can't really complain about that.

What I can complain about is the lack of indication they are doing stuff. Over a month of no communication and nowhere that I can see any updates, I kind of feel like they lost my order or forgot. I'm glad they are on it though. I've anecdotally read people with no refunds after 2 months which is more than 30 days and an obvious mistake there. I didn't want to be one of those statistics.

You are correct, the 8GB and shipping 4GB is not fair and I hope they address each one that happened w/ an optional exchange, refund or quick return.

The 220 nits is certainly unacceptable, but oddly enough, I've seen reports that say it isn't as bad as you'd think. I have no opinion on it, other than on paper that seems very low.

Yeah, the whole 220 nit thing has been completely over blown. My screen is absolutely fine, so was my previous one. Plenty bright enough, granted I don't have the option to burn my retinas, but 99% of the time it's absolutely acceptable. My previous laptop was an aorus x3 with a izlo ips 4k screen and I think the alienwares screen is better. Plus, it has less light bleed than the Aorus did.

Anyone know if the 8gb card is still backordered? It seems that's the only option available now on the site and I just ordered one yesterday. Hopefully the 4gb switcheroo isn't still happening.

I'm not satisfied. On one hand I had the risk of a return, reorder and receipt of another 4gb vram machine likely featuring an inferior screen, with the other Dell option being to accept the risk of running out of VRAM on the go in the future...

The 220 nits Samsung panel is real. Just look at the other thread where people are desperate enough to void warranty and self-replace it.

I bet most people who claim 220nits are fine actually won the 300 nits LG panel in the Dell Component Lottery.

honestly man if you like your FHD screen keep the 4GB 980M.

I have gone back and forth about this, bottom line is 4GB (not 3gb or 2gb that other computers ship with) is enough, especially if you're going FHD.

the 980M will be replaced this year with pascal, 8gb or 4gb, it won't be the hot **** anymore, so my view is get the biggest discount you can this year, and stay with 4gb.

By the time you want 8gb of Vram and that is limiting you- you'll have the AGA with a desktop pascal card - chances are if you have 4gb or 8gb 980 you'll find yourself using a new pascal card in the AGA soon, which bypasses the interal card, so who cares?

8gb is way overblown IMO - I'm happy with a heavily discounted 980M 4gb unit, and the AGA.

Appreciate your trying to console me a bit :) Agree that 4GB will likely hold water for gaming purposes until 2017 if not beyond. Played a few games on ultra and not once breached 2GB usage.

Unfortunately I bought this computer for professional use on the go so the argument doesn't apply, nor would the GA fill the mobile VRAM gap. Ironically, I'm one of the very few users who would have had a non-zero probability of significantly benefiting from the 8GB in 2016... fortunately lack of extra memory is more likely to hamper performance than stop the show for me. Then again, performance is what AW is all about.

I did get the LG panel, so I cant speak for the Samsung. It's definitely 220 nits, but that's still plenty bright enough.

What do you mean by "the LG panel"? What's the model id? My LG panel (apparently the best FHD available from Dell) is 300 nits.

    etern4l,

May I ask what you do that would benefit for the 8GB VRAM?

Also, someone posted pictures of their 220 nits display and it looked pretty bright (not sure what the display manufacturer was tho).

Various computations using CUDA, mostly Monte Carlo simulations for which this architecture excels.

Well, there may have been a happy punter who possibly didn't know much better, but by and large the screen is getting lambasted, vide the notebookcheck AW15 R2 review.

I dont really mind the screen that much.. the times when it annoys me are when its next to another screen such as my TV, and the blues and brightness look totally different. Also, the dead pixel in the middle of the screen is driving me crazy :)

so.. I did this from Dell Pro support (which i found out is awesome, and i should have bought 3 years, and and grrrr) and the USA team will get the UK Team to replace

    -my screen
-My keyboard which has an intermittent key that works every few presses (should get a Uk keyboard too, wich is a plus)
-My 256 GB NMVE ssd which decided to stop working at all

    in one service call.

So they replacing it no questions asked.

Nice! All under the premium service warranty?

So the UK keyboard is better eh? Quality wise or just a better batch than the US ones?

no not quality wise, i prefer the layout because it has the £ and € signs mostly and i prefer the placement of the @ ;) I do miss having it, not a huge deal but i set my us keyboard to UK style cause i've gotten used to it over the years.

Yeah premium support is really impressive.. i regret not buying more time on it.

I just called to extend warranty and I just ordered the laptop yesterday. The rep I got said I have to receive the item first and give service tag before they can do anything for me. Meanwhile on another thread here, someone said it'll cost $700 to get 3 total years of warranty if you extend after you received your laptop. Only option is to return and reorder for best rates. Hugely stupid and a waste of time and money for everyone if you ask me.

I realise this thread is becoming a bit of a chat fest :) for FHD panel complaints and 8gb complaints. I think it is clear, dell is refunding others while trying to cut deals (AGA with gfx cards, 10% discounts) with others.

Just wanted to say I have ordered an LG FHD Panel from a supplier (300 Nits, Model LP156WF6) From a UK supplier for 50£ (2 year warranty). I'll be installing it in my laptop this week and can share the outcome. Cheers

Well, if anyone wants to upgrade their FHD and they're in the UK - instead of entering into ANOTHER panel lottery with 3rd party suppliers (as i've just experienced), and they're interested in the supplier i found ( london based ):

I had him on the phone and he was really professional and knowledgeable..he conceded the way the market operates by advertising desirable part numbers and sending "compatible" parts is irritating, he was really knowledgable about the difference between each panel i rattled off the part numbers to. The LG won't be as good as the AUO panel, but at least it is a good higher end FHD screen, and the supplier is a good guy. i can provide the website/phone number in a PM so it doesnt look like i'm advertising here.

I was considering this option prior to giving up on the pursuit of 8GB replacement. The LG screen is amazing for my purposes. The main dowside is that it's a 6 bit panel (262k colours), which is occasionally noticeable. The main downside of the self-upgrade route seems to be the impact on the warranty :(

Not sure what impact you're saying - why would it impact the warranty?

    - The computer is user servicable (manual is available online)
    - I couldnt care less if they dont want to warranty the 40-50£ replaceable part
    - They have to continue offering warranty to existing parts that are theirs
    - From what I can see in the manual it is very easy to replace the screen, 15 mins max job

Considering i used to repaste and totally dissasemble my XPS 1730 I'm pretty sure i'll be ok.

FYI: All 15.6inch 30 pin connector FHD panels are 6Bit.

Also - can you please let me know what LG Part number you got? You can tell via HWInfo64

Someone on these forums mentioned that opening the laptop up beyond the base plate voids the warranty in general. I guess for that to make sense, there would need to be some warranty stickers (nothing on the outside I can see). Might be worth checking with Dell. Anyway, my panel id is LGD04B9.

Last I remember, Dell can ship you replacement parts but if its not a technician that installs it, its all on you. If you receive a part that's damaged, they'll blame you for breaking it while handling it. After that I'm not sure if they'll continue to send another part out.

The 980M will be replaced by the 980MX later this year, which is just a 128 shader bumped maxwell part .

    I wouldn't expect a Pascal mobile high-end part until at least Q3/4 2017.

I ordered my AW15 yesterday and was given a 01/28 delivery date. The 4GB part is no where to be found on their site. I would like to believe they have this sorted out by now. Errors in handling/processing are one thing but this would be essentially blatant mis-representation and open Dell up to a plethora of consumer advocate agency problems.

Someone is getting their buttocks chewed for this, I can assure you.

I just ordered that spec + 1TB HDD, 128SSD and 16GB RAM, for $1,800 from the Dell Outlet. With 25% off coupon.

Please come and visit Dell UK website for your wide selection of subpar hardware configurations including the 980M 4GB. Of course, the 8GB variant is also available to order (wink wink).

Those screw strip very easy, I always suggest using a torque driver at no more than 3-4lbs per inch setting. But if it was already stripped from factory? That should not happen as Foxconn requires pre torqued drivers calibrated weekly to install all screws.

But it could happen? Sorry to hear about it.

I got it from the outlet and unfortunately it looks like there was a lot of digging around going on under the screen, god knows why. I guess i got lucky in some ways (price) unlucky that it seems someone dug around inside this machine... before i got it from the outlet.

Anyway i managed to remove the screw with a 5MM drill bit. FHD screen is installed and brighter / better colors than the factory one.

i managed to get some super glue (lol) on my chassis though so looking at the best ways to remove that... another story.
