I have read as much as I can in some of the threads here. But I am still on the fence on what to get. I don't do much but play games, is the $$$ worth spending on the PRO? Will I even be able to see the difference?

Other huge question I am confused on is what is the best way to move the OS from the 128 SSD I have currently in my R3 to the new one I buy?

    Thanks for your input!

Not worth it imo. Go for more storage over anything if you're a gamer

Personally I want the fastest thing possible. But if money is an issue, then it's pretty much decided that you should stick with evo as its a lot cheaper and has sales often.

Edit: you'll definitely see some really high numbers in benchmarks on the pro but in real life experience it is probably marginal if you don't game.

I picked up the 1TB 850 Evo 2.5" and replaced the 1TB spinner. It's been fantastic and no issues.

the 850 EVO consume less energy = more battery life
also cost less, in real world the performance is the same and the heat is less and no throtlling

If able, go Pro for maximum performance as it's simply the best of the best. Period. However, Evo is also the best of the best. So you can't go wrong either way. Like others have mentioned, you won't notice much of a real world difference with the SSD's with normal tasks.....

I have the 1TB Pro in my 17" R3 and a 500GB Evo as an external for my multimedia and love them both.

    Look at it this way:

    #1 Samsung Pro
    #1.1 Samsung Evo

follow up question. since the EVO is SATA would I be able to get 2 and put them in raid. I know I had read that it didn't really work with the PRO due to pciE channels only being x2 on the second slot.

I'm not sure if you can raid two 2.5 drives. Are there even two bays inside?

From what I've been seeing, it's a little grey....since one is 2x and one is 4x slots. There has been a lot of mention about having to tweak the bios etc....

Ah, in that case, there was another thread on here where one user did raid two 950 pro and the read speed was about the same as a single drive but the write speed did see the raid improvement of about double.

ok so I have a 512 950 pro in my basket. before I pull the trigger what is the best way for me to move my OS from the current 128 m2 SSD that came stock? also for the 32gb ram kits is G. Skill good or do I have to go with crucial from their website at twice the price?

    G. SKill is good, just make sure you buy the correct speed.

Someone mentioned using the Samsung migration tool. I'm not sure on specifics but I would imagine moving the 128 to the 2 channel slot and putting the 950 in the main slot and then migrate everything over. Hopefully that works.

Before I've purchased my 950 Pro's I've done some extensive research on the two...

The 950 Pro and the SM 951 hardware wise are the same, with only minor cosmetic differences and software features/support.

    They both utilize NVMe drivers.

The Samsung Magician Program is only supported on the 950 Pro. Whereas the SM951 is not supported.

Although they are the same cars, the SM951 is a little lighter so it has a better power to weight ratio. (ie...less the software support features that are on the 950 Pro, the SM951 is the base model car with the same engine as the 950 Pro so it has a lot less weight to pull that may give you a slight advantage int he 1/4 mile, but barely.)

950 Pro has a 5 year warranty. (Your Limited Edition car model...)

SM951 has a 3 year warranty. (Your Base Model...)

It just boils down to whether you want the bells and whistles (Samsung Magician features/support) or not.

hi.. if you want to transfer just the OS ill suggest using the alienware respawn because it will copy the complete stock OS and recovery partion of your original 128gig ssd..

RAPID is useless and the 950 pro driver works with SM951, I have it on my laptop that way.. Warranty is less but yes, 2 years extra isn't worth it IMO... Nothing special about Magician so your perfectly fine without it.. The driver is all you need tbh.. It's your money in the end, do as you see fit!

I own both the 850 pro and the 950 pro and have tried booting and using each as the main. TBH you really won't notice the difference on the 950 pro. I'd advise just getting the 850 or 850 pro. I have tried them both on the Alienware 17 r3 and also on my Acer VN7 592G

Nice! I too have the Pro and it's awesome. Just posted some speed test screen shots on my m.2 thread. (Edit: Oh I assume you were talking about the 950 Sata III SSD eh? Oops..either way you'll be one happy camper.)

You can use Alienware Respawn and/or just use this link. It's what I did....(thanks to @hmscott)

I prefer the USB flash drive route.

I used Acronis TrueImage to move my OS from the HDD that came with the 15R2 to SSD that i bought myself.
    One click and it's done.

Why do you think RAPID is useless?

Do you still call it useless?

All it does is use your RAM as a write cache, which artificially inflates benchmark numbers and also creates potential for data loss - if your computer dies, anything in that cache will be lost forever.
Besides, Windows caches things to RAM anyway, so having two caching sources is a bit redundant

Somewhat agree. I have 500gb 950 pro pcie and get 2500 read 1900 right, but I also have 1tb 850 evo 2.5" which kind of really needs the rapid mode. Huge noticeable difference on the evo's. Pro 840 850 both, not so much difference with/without rapid. And with 32gb ram, you can transfer some pretty large files with awesome speeds. My evo with rapid writes/reads better than my pcie 950 pro.

So far I've just installed my m.2 950 Pro without any drivers and allocated the m.2 Pro so that I could install Windows.... everything seems to be working just fine...

Is having the driver for the m.2 950 Pro imperative? If so, mind sharing the link you've used to download?

    Thanks.

Well it all seems to work just fine. I don't know what programs to check some of these things yet to show you.

The G.Skill ram is good to go and the 950 was recognized right away with no issues!
