Depends on what you use your system for. If you're a power user that has 40 browser tabs + skype + HW monitoring + Photoshop + a game running - 16GB is recommended. But if you can live without have EVERYTHING on at the same time - 8GB is fine.

8GB is still not enough if you're just gaming. I have a lot of people now who say their pc is struggling to run a game when it shouldn't and it's fixed by adding a stick of ram.

I wouldn't buy a system without 16gb in it but that is just me.

I think 16GB is a good number to stick with now a days. :)
Plus for some reason I end up with a million windows open so maybe Im slightly biased. :)

16 is my minimum; i prefer 32. Only because 32 allows to have a sort of buffer, and i sometimes like to have a small ramcache :D

Get the 8GB version. Buy the 16GB RAM separately from Amazon or Newegg.

IF you are buying from Dell 8gb or no gb of ram. if its from corsair or hyberX 16 should be fine in 2017... 32 if you have a ton of tabs open.

If you buy 8gb you are likely to end up with ONE STICK of ddr memory. For those who dont know ddr memory uses 2 sticks to run at double data rate. So you would likely be running significantly slower. For that reason 16gb is highly recommended.

With dell they charge a premium for the ram upgrades. Its one way they make money. If you can handle the research of what ram works best and swapping out your ram sticks yourself, then you will likely be able to afford the top tier ram that your laptop supports for the same price dell charges for 16gb of middle of the line ram.
