Is there any real difference, at least one that makes the i7 worth $150?

In my opinion, there is certainly not $150 difference between the two. Bar the slightly increased clock and the extra 1MB of L3 Cache on the i7, they are practically the same. In fact, I might even go so far as to say that the i5 was probably put through the binning process to be an i7 but didn't make the grade.

Bottom line, there would be little noticeable real world difference between them so unless you have cash to burn, go with the i5.

I agree. One thing you have to keep in mind is that whatever laptop the U series are in, they are in there for a reason because they get good gas mileage.

I too would easily consider the i5 if that was my only choice. Either way you can't go wrong.

Yes... but not with the acual processor.

You need to get 6500u if you also want the GTX 965M as an option

Otherwise you get the GTX 960M

The 965M is about 35% faster than the 960M

Wow 35% from the 960M to 965M? Really? I have the 960M in my XPS and also a 965M in my friends 15R2 and it doesn't seem like a 35% increase.

I was under the impression that the performance improvements from the lower end 960m->965m were not as big, maybe 10-15% compared to the 965M -> 970M being bigger of a gap and so on...where the 980M towers them all (obviously); the point being that going from the 970M -> 980M is greater than 960M -> 965M?

Phew....what a tongue twister. But you get my point haha.

I was thinking synthetic benchmarks when I was typing (5500 in 3D Mark 11 to 7500 in 3D Mark = about 35% increase)

But yea, probably 15% in game average. 25% in well optimized games (Fallout 4 for example). 10% in console port.

The GTX 965m in the 13 R2 is the updated 2016 version, which performs better than the older one. The one in the 15 R2 is the first version. So that may also be a factor.
Currently, Alienware has an i7-6500u + GTX 965m + 512 GB PCIe SSD + 16 GB configuration 13 R2 for US$1449, which is less than if you got an i5 + GTX 960m, with the rest being the same ( link).

The OLED model only allows you to get a 4gb 960m if you get the 6500u

Actually, that's not true. But if you really wanted OLED (and you should have mentioned that in your first post or else we might reecommend something you're not interested in), then yeah, it may not be worth the $150 upgrade. Of course, you can always haggle the price for it to be lower, but that's if you can be able to do such a thing.

Oh jeez, $1800. I got the 960m model for around $1350 before taxes, i5 and 256 gb pcie, and I can get cheap ram later... All I need is a nice screen, a good trackpad and something that plays games decently enough, I have a custom 6600k and a 1080 for real gaming

The one in the link is the exact model I ordered. Managed to get it for $1738 after tax with the GFX Amplifier by negotiating with sales rep in chat.
