is there a standard drive dell uses for the Alienware 17 r4 512gb versions? If so, which could I expect to receive?

No, it varies by what they have in stock st the time. It ranges between sandisk, Samsung, Toshiba and I’ve even seen some liteons.

Add SK Hynix as well. Samsung and SK Hynix are good ones. Others throttle at minimal load and have worse SSD lifetime due to increased heat.

Mine came with a sandisk a400 nvme drive. It actually runs pretty cool and doesn’t throttle.

Haven't seen any complaints from Sandisk users. Majority of the problems was on Toshiba drive.

    That's interesting
My new laptop has flagged as shipped so hopefully will find out soon

Is there any recourse with dell if I get one of the ones that throttle and how can I tell if it has this problem?

If you have got the service tag you can check Current config via alienware/dell website.

Okay I found the laptop and this is the info in the drive section:

    70KCW SSDR, 512G, P34, 80S3, TECHNICAL SHEET, XG5

Hard drive is clearly Hitatchi, the above doesn't mean a lot to me

I couldn't see a manufacturer I'd on that info string, the hard drive one said Hitachi so am not sure what it is that's coming. Although xg5 web search seems to indicate.potentially Toshiba?

    I'm UK based

I'd keep that Toshiba aside and use Samsung 960 EVO 512GB m.2 for OS/apps and Crucial MX300 525GB M.2 or 1TB version if you pick up a sweet deal. For games I prefer SATA m.2 drives since NVMe hardly see benefits.

I have a Samsung 950 Pro in my old laptop (the PM951 it came with I used as data)

The new one comes with a 1Tb 7200 so my thought was to use the Samsung as boot and keep the preexisting SSD as a data drive, along with the 1Tb. Will sell my old laptop with its PM951. So, would it really make a huge difference using the Toshiba in this way?

Although oddly my old laptop configuration from the service tag says it has an XG3N which seems to be a Toshiba but I know that it actually has a Samsung, so that's odd. I guess until it actually arrives it's possible it has something that isn't a Toshiba?

Keep that Toshiba with you in case you wanna send the laptop for repairs just put that in with stock dell OS and apps.
PM951 and 950 pro are good enough and you don't need to buy 960 evo.

The pm951 needs to stay with my old laptop as it's still under warranty so the new buyer will need it

But is the Toshiba really that bad to be used as a secondary drive?

Majority were saying its bad due to excessive heat produced by it when used in regions with high ambient temps or even bad airflow. You can try that Toshiba and see if it has issue. BTW, even mine service tag suggested that PCIe SSD was Toshiba XG3 but I got PM951.

Don't forget that Toshiba have made BIG improvements since the XG3. Granted the XG3 was horse manure!

The XG5 though is a beast and well worth keeping. 3000MB/s read speeds and 1000MB/s write, it's almost as fast as a Samsung and the temperatures have dropped considerably too (also comparable to Samsung). I have lots of evidence to support this (see SSD link in my signature), i keep mine as an OS boot drive and have games on a secondary Samsung 960 EVO

Have you finally fixed the write speed?

That sounds interesting, so perhaps I should hope that my laptop does that that drive. It's coming tomorrow so will soon find out

If it is the xg5 then I should have my Samsung 950 pro as the secondary drive, would that be the best approach or is the other way round better?
