Hello all. So I have been doing some research on stuttering frame rates when playing games...... It drives me insane!! This may even help a'lot of gamers....

So, let me explain. We all know consoles run at 30 FPS and yet run smoother than a'lot of pc games running at 50 FPS (even with V-Sync). This is because most TV's run at 1080i when gaming on consoles, which is 30hz, not 60hz. So the 30 FPS on consoles match what your TV is outputting and as a result, its runs smooth.

So I did some testing..... V-Sync requires you to maintain 60 FPS (on 60hz display) minimum so the the number of frames rendered matches the numbers of frames your screen can output, otherwise you get a frame stutters and its a "frame pace" issue.

So.... I have a 980ti in my AGA and when playing games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Assassins Creed Syndicate and other demanding games on ultra settings, I get a stuttering whenever my frame rate drops below a steady 60 FPS. I have found that if I reduce my refresh rate to 48hz on my 1080p screen then the stuttering goes away completely unless my fps drop below 48fps (which is 48hz) which gives me more room for raising settings.

What I really want to know is..... Before I go and spend out on upgrading my Screen to 4k. I need someone to test for me if its still smooth running at 30hz (in your intel display settings) and at 30 FPS, VSync on. My display wont go below 48hz annoyingly so cannot test myself.
If it runs smoothly then I shall upgrade. Would like a video if at all possible??

    Many thanks

30fps on a console doesnt run more smooth and the last time I saw a TV output a console game at 1080i was in the PS3 era with some obscure indie titles etc.Put adaptive vsync at half framerate and you have the exact console feel.

OK so was wrong about all games being 1080i nowa days but reducing the refresh rate does give it a smoother feel IF you cant maintain the 60FPS.
Can you apply adaptive V-Sync in all games?

Can you use adaptive v-sync on all games?

GSync will fix that problem completely as will Freesync. Just to note, most well versed PC gamers are well aware of this. However, you may want to look into getting a GSync laptop, as you'll play stutter free. The Sager NP8658 has it, the MSI GT72, the Aorus X7 and a few others you can google. I play at 4k with Gsync and havent seen stuttering in a while so I would recommend.

I play Rise of the Tomb Raider on 4K Ultra on a 970M and I am not getting any stutter. If you are, you have some serious issues with that machine. You DEFINITELY shouldn't be getting stutter with a desktop card in an amplifier either.

Television sets do not have the resolution or ms rate that a computer monitor has either, so you really cannot compare those two.

Uh... No way your maxing that game at 4k ultra with one 970m. That card hits like 50 fps at 1080p with a mix of high and medium. I can't even get 60fps on 4k ultra without both my cards on.
Also... the resolution is the same on a tv and monitor i.e. 1920x1080 is common on both. What is ms rate?

Yeah there's no way you're doing ultra at 4k with a 970m. My 980m struggles at qhd

Yeah even my desktop 970GTX is struggling to get everything on high settings at 60fps. I still have drops to 45fps at times. I think 4k at 30fps is still even a stretch too far.

So I cant afford a G-Sync monitor and also have nowhere to put it as I don't have a desk. I want the 4K screen on my laptop. The thing is, I know my 980ti wont run games on ultra at 60 FPS but it will at 30 - 40 FPS but I still want to get rid of the frame pace issue. Is 30hz a playable solution? Do other users do this to eliminate frame stutter?
I just want some answers before i purchase the 4k and find I cant play alot of games on ultra because the awful frame rates.
I know on consoles, Rise of the Tomb Raider frame rate target is 30 FPS and its fairly smooth. Will it be like this if I set my screen to 30 hz with V-Sync on?
And the 970m would struggle on 1080p with settings on ultra on Rise of the Tomb Raider!
AND you can compare them as when I lower my refresh rate to 48 hz, as long as I maintain 48 FPS, its smooth!

Anybody play at 30hz to get a good gaming experience when you cant reach 60 FPS? Is it playable or just poor!?

I find 30fps horrible. Also on the consoles (I played Destiny for days but in deathmatch I found 30fps really distracting.

YOu can install EVGA precision X and use frame rate targetting and instead 60fps fill in 30fps. I just noticed the mobile 970m and 980m do not have the option to use adaptive vsync.

I'd steer clear of EVGA Precision X. It's known to corrupt the EDID of your screen. I'm not sure if this is the case for the newer Alienwares, but at least the 2013 and before machines had that problem.
