Short Version; Get the (cheaper) 2133, but I might not get it at all.

    Long version;
I wrote about this in depth in this thread; http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/faster-ddr4.787115/#post-10184640
Here's a good comparison with handbrake and 2133 vs 3200 ram.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/8959/...-3200-with-gskill-corsair-adata-and-crucial/4
If you already have 16GB, you're honestly almost certainly good with what you already have.

    Addressing the 32GB aspect;
You mentioned that you did a lot of UHD video editing, although compression & conversion tools can be ram size(not speed) sensitive, 16GB is a tremendous amount of ram.
I recommend taking a look at techspot's report concerning the use of Adobe CC and 4/8 and 16GG of ram. Note that they reported 12GB of ram 'usage' but saw very little benefit from moving to 16GB.
    http://www.techspot.com/article/1043-8gb-vs-16gb-ram/

While certainly UHD content is much more demanding, You'd have to be 'using' 2-3 times acutal ram capacity to see a noticeable improvement.

I agree that 16GB is a lot of RAM, but I remember when 8MB (MEGAbytes) was a lot of RAM. If your renders burn through your RAM and swap to disk cache, the speed penalty will be measured in minutes, if not hours. As said, the speed of the RAM is not going to make a material difference--the only reason to get more RAM is to avoid running out of RAM.

If the OP is running16GB with his new machine and has found himself going into swap, then by all means buy the 32GB sticks. But I would wait until somebody else has done it and reported it works, and buy the exact same sticks.

I have yet to see my RAM use go above 9GB or so. To me that says I've got plenty of headroom with 16GB. My personal RAM-envy is focused on my 4GB 980m which I've gotten up to 3GB used, so I'm less confident of the headroom there.

    Thanks guys...great info...

As for my usage, I'm scratching the ceiling and running out of RAM at 16GB. This is why I'm determined to go 32GB :)

The list in the OP are confirmed and working 16GBx2 sticks.

@Lozz, great links...I remember reading over those threads. Good stuff.

@john green, absolutely correct....even seconds count when it's all added up.

Would it be wise to shy away from G.Skill in this case due to the that particular model having a higher CL? The stability and compatibility would be in question yes?

I take back my comment about existance of 2x16gb hyper x - it is offered with the clevo/xmg in 4x8GB config...

XMG only offer the Samsung 2133 16GB sodimms:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-2x-...6713&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+ddr4+sodimm+32gb

I also take back my comment on elevated G.SKILL CL. Looking at the 2400MHz kits available, crucial is CL17, while G.SKILL is CL16. Also G.SKILL offers modules going up to 2800MHz: although it's hard to say if they would work in an AW15/17 given the limited DRAM setup options in bios (no timing control)

you know a lot about Ram, and i want to take advantage of that and ask you something. I have an Alienware 15 R1 with i7 4710hq and i have 8 gb of ram at 1600Mhz , i want to upgrade to 16gb DDR3L of Kingston hyper x at 1866Mhz. My question is, my notebook is going to work with the 1866Mhz frecuency???

Okay so would we want to look for the highest speed with the tightest timing (lowest CL) for our AW laptops, given the lack of adjustability of timing in BIOS?

G.Skill on Newegg has the following available for 2x16GB DDR4 sticks:

    2133 (PC4 17000)
    Cas Latency: 15
    Timing: 15-15-15-36

    2400 (PC4 19200)
    Cas Latency: 16
    Timing: 16-16-16-39

    2666 (PC4 21300)
    Cas Latency: 18
    Timing: 18-18-18-43

    2800 (PC4 22400)
    Cas Latency: 18
    Timing: 18-18-18-43

Would it be true to say that it is probably best to just go with the 2133 with the tighter timing to be on the safe side?...as there would be unmeasurable (real world) gains going with the higher speeds with the most loose timings, thus having more potential of hiccups?

Note: Crucial offers 2x16GB sticks that say compatible for Alienware 17 R3 with the following specs:

    2400 (PC4 19200)
    Cas Latency: 17 ish?*
    Timing: 17-17-17-41 ish?*

    * Based on the numbers above of the G.Skills as it the Crucial seems to fit in between the 2400 and 2666 of Crucial's.

Thoughts? Which one should I order? Cost is not a factor. I just am needing the most stable and fastest 2x16GB sticks.

    Thanks.

    This is what Kingston said,

"HX421S13IBK2/16, may or may not work and is not guaranteed to work. The recommended part number is two pieces of , KVR16S11/8.
Thank you for considering using Kingston Technology as your upgrade partner." -

    ~Darren/Kingston Technical Support

Sounds like a typical newbie / reading from a script / don't know squat about anything type of reply. It's very typical of these morons. They don't know anything. *Face Palm*

I did notice that the timing is at 13-13-13.....I wonder if our AW's would be more in favor of those low/tight timing compared to the others offered with higher timing numbers.

    Any RAM experts here?

This is a bit confusing with all these different timing and cas lat numbers....it reminds of octane for your car...sure you can run >87 in your sports car, but that's not going to give you the best performance of what it could be at a higher octane gas....

What is the best Timing and Cas Latency for our Skylake AW's????

    Thanks.

So they wont work on my AW15R2?

When I looked the referenced/recommended RAM, it shows that they are DDR3 1600MHz..

    8GB Module - DDR3 1600MHz
    Part Number: KVR16S11/8

I thought the AW15R2 supported DDR4 RAM at 2133 MHz?

So if you ever hear anyone yap about, "...you don't need 32GB of RAM, it's overboard blah blah blah..." just link them here....

Major editing, rendering and with VM's .... 16GB is the new low end standard.... :)

Just so anyone else who comes across this knows, G.Skill DDR4 2800MHz 32GB (2x16GB) DOES WORK in the Alienware 17 R3.

You will need to change the BIOS settings for the RAM to XMP1 in order for it to have the proper timings recognized. Oddly enough, a single 16GB stick will show the timings stated on the G.Skill website, but the full 32GB actually goes a tad bit tighter: 18-17-17-41

XMP2 cannot be used, it will just revert to XMP1 regardless...

So, rejoice! Any G.Skill set should be fine!!! @iunlock please add to the list of confirmed!

I am running AW 17 R3 with 32GB of HyperX Infinity 2400 with CL14, it's working fine including the AW L3 OC setting. I think this is the fastest RAM I could find.

You can see timings from it in my post on this page:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/official-alienware-17-r2-r3-owners-lounge.770314/page-282

    This is what I bought.
    https://m.shop.bt.com/products/king...of-2--hyperx-impact-hx424s14ibk2-32-BZN9.html

I also created a 4GB Ramdisk as I have plenty spare, the benchmark is on the following thread.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/ramdisk.791874/

I might go up to an 8GB Ramdisk and see if that runs OK, then I can download bigger files like 4k video into the Ramdisk, then move them to other storage if I want to keep them.

    I ended up getting the Corsair Vengeance Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHz CL18 Memory Kit (CMSX32GX4M2A2666C18).

Newegg.ca had it on sale for $239.99+tax, $50.00 cheaper than usual: LINK

I just trust the Corsair Vengeance Series, that's what I have in my AW18, so kinda wanted to stick with them.

Also after doing some research online, THIS REVIEW assured me I was making the right choice.

Brother Fox did a lot of real world performance/benchmarking/testing on the AW18 with 32GB of various high performance brands ... Despite faster claims from other manufacturers, in real world testing the Corsair Vengeance still came out on top. This has also greatly influenced my decision. May not be the fact with the DDR4 series, but the difference in real world performance is so minuscule that reliability takes the win.

Hey guys, so between the G.Skill (2133) and Micron Technologies (2133), which RAM sticks would you prefer over the other?

There's not much info. about this online...and from the looks of it, Micron Technology seems to be a cheaper "B Grade," type RAM that is mass produced to be used in consumer computers etc...

I've seen a lot of refurbished Micron Technology RAM for sale, which leads me to believe that they are not of good quality. True?

I'm not saying G.Skill is all that either, but I'm curious out of the two, which ones would you keep and why?

    Thanks!

I don't plan to mess with the timings or anything, but do those numbers mean anything other than the sticks capability?
