I'm looking for a 4K monitor to do editing on and play 4k movies on.

Is the uhd screen better enough on the 17 to put up with carrying the extra weight over the 15? (Carry to work and class)

Also if I have a 1080 at home, is it worth getting the enclosure for the Alienware laptop? (I'm fine with medium settings 4K, right now my desktop monitor is only a 1440p 60htz CAD monitor)

If quality is your thing... IGZO all the way.

Enclosure... you mean the amp... don't worry about that unless you got an extra g to spend and really want a 1080gpu.

For only about $150~ and you are already have a 1080. I would say it's worth it for sure.

17! Better cooling, 1080 coming soon, more panel to look at.
The AMP uses only 4x PCI lanes so even with a 1080 in there it will not perform as well as a 1080 that comes in the AW17 laptop.

ah didnt know that about the amp.
def leaning towards the 17, just concern since people say its too big to carry around and that the 6820hk is too hot. (the 6820 bundle is priced better than the 6700)

The PCI lanes thing, while true, isn't as big a deal as it sounds. Puget Systems and Anandtech have tested in the past and the difference is 1-2fps. At least the amp is pci 3.0 so x4 runs at 4GB/sec which is probably not going to bottleneck in single gpu single monitor situations.

There's LOTS of reports of the AW15r3 having heating issues, but not so many with the AW17r4 ;)

I went with 17 for supposedly better cooling and a larger screen is always good.
