    17 R3 I7 6820 how do overclock it?

    I have the new Alienware with the 6820. It is supposed to be dynamically overclocked, but when I run test it only runs to 3.4. On the Dell's website it says it supposed to be dynamically o'clock to 4.0 how do I do this?

    I'm having issues with this as well, my system runs all 4 cores @3.6 loaded and doesn't seem to throttle or drop under load like Prime95 etc. Intel XTU settings don't seem to stick after clicking "apply"??
    In the bios I have a "cpu performance options" or something like that, when I enable that I get no overclocking options for the CPU whatsoever it just opens up some memory options like XMP profiles etc?
    I don't get what the deal is or how to OC anything on this rig really, My old desktop I built with a 2500K I got setup and running solid as a rock for the last few years at 5ghz but this laptop is stumping me!
    And yes I have the i7 6820hk as well.

    Ok figured it out with some help, the stock bios do not have any of the cpu overclock functions in it, you need to get the latest bios file from Dell and flash the bios then you will have the options to overclock from the bios and they make it easy with a couple different profiles you can load with a click and save. Not the kind of overclocking I am used to but as long as it works I guess. I'm on "level 2" overclock and my cpu is running a 3.8 on all cores under heavy load, seems stable so far.

    You do realise that this means that Dell are misleading customers as is it doesn't "dynamically overclock to 4.1 GHz" right of the box. Dell are effectively false advertising and the product isn't doing the speed that is expected.

    Why does it bother me, I have the AW15 and same CPU currently being shipped to me. Will see if there is anything when I get mine, doubt be any different though.

    Personally I don't think it is acceptable that the end user has to unknowingly upgrade the BIOS and then apply a lesser overclock through the BIOS manually.

    I agree 100% that they were misleading in there marketing but I do remember it said "Up too 4.14ghz"
    Also playing with the settings what I am seeing on mine is that 4+ ghz on all cores may be tough to achieve solid stability and good temps (but I haven't spent much time on it) I'm guessing this is why these are not coming cranked way up and being shipped at 3.4 or whatever it was.

    I have an Alienware Aurora with i5-2500K as well (paired with GTX 980TI..this thing fly :) ). And yes, in the Bios it have OC option 1 and 2 (up to 4.1GHZ if I recall). Then I manually OC'ed to 4.5GHZ so you might be able to do the same on the laptop.

    Hi Dan,

    I recently purchased the same Alienware 17 R3 and facing the same issue you mentioned. I tried updating the bios to the latest version (1.2.3) but it still doesn't give me the option to overclock with the options like level 1, 2 or 3. Can you please share with me, which bios version did you download from the Dell support site or was it a custom modded one. For the life of me, I cannot seem to find any unlocked bios from Google for our model. Thank you in advance.

    Afaik the dynamic overclocking thing is supposed to work when the Graphics Amplifier is plugged in, since all the cooling will be focused on the cpu.

    I have the latest BIOS (1.2.3) and the options are under the advanced tab. Its like performance settings or something.

    Its there.

    And yes on OC level 3 it will do 4.1 ghz, no one mislead you guys...... stop *****ing.

    Yes, but its not like dell specifically told everyone that all 4 cores would be run at 4.1.

    Point is the system is capable, its just nitpicking at this point.

    Oc on 1 core is nonsense. Only Oc on 4 cores is useful.
    I do not think I've ever seen or experienced that someone run Oc level 3 stable 24/7. Remember that this is Oc on 1 core and not all 4.

    My R3 does 3.9Ghz on all 4 cores 24/7 at oc lvl2. I didnt try oc3 yet since there are some reports about Instability, but if i would use lvl3 i guess it would be 4.1Ghz on all 4 cores.

    been on oc level 3 since first power up and not a single problem super stable
    have ben running prime 95 test for 12 hours in the first week and no problem
    not a single bluescreen

    Have you overclockers checked your cpu speed after entering sleep and then resuming? Mine is getting stuck at 3.6GHz (despite successful Level 2 oc on initial boot):

    I have been running OC3 for a few month now all stable. All 4 cores run at 3990Mhz i am sure turbo boost will boost to 4100Mhz Thats what turbo boost is and only works maximum on one core as most applications only use one core. The bottleneck isnt your cpu so the focus being the cpu unless you are video encoding or compressing should actually be on the gpu as that is where gaming performance counts.
