I fancy buying an Alienware 15 - but I'd like to use it for VR and have resigned to waiting for the 10xx mobile GPUs to be released.

The rumour mill suggests that the 1080 MXM will either be announced on August 1st - or at Gamescom on August 15th.

Would anyone care to guess what the delay will be before the first Alienware laptops with the new cards appear after that?

As of yet, there doesn't seem to be any rumored Slim Profile laptops with the GTX 1080 or 1070. Only the larger Asus and Clevos have been put forward to have "next gen gfx". Probably not till next year for AW; late November the earliest.

At any rate the GFX amp for AW should be VR capable now if you don't mind it being external

I see - that's really useful info. I hadn't realised that the AW were classed as slim.

The Amplifier is a tempting option - I think I'll wait and see just how lap-crushingly huge the launch 1080m laptops are next month and then decide between the two options. I also need a 4k screen which narrows my options a bit.

There are no ultrabooks, but are slim comparatively speaking. They are about 1.1" thin, while the anounced Asus is about 2" and the Clevos run from 1.5 to 2" depending on model

Even if the 1080m or mobile 1080 desktop gpu is announced around the 1st of August Alienware is usually 4-6 months behind on releasing updated machines.

Dell aren't quite that slow. If the new GPUs are announced on 1 August, we'll probably see them available in October.

If there's a delay beyond that, it'll be due to Intel's Kaby Lake release. That's due out by the end of the year, and there's not a lot of point updating the Skylake motherboards if they're being phased out a month later.

Nvidia has trouble manufacturing pascal chips. I fear it can take a while.

Thanks again for the replies on this. I've gone to see some thicker 17" laptops in person and they don't look too terrifying - and I quite like the sound of the more upgradeable Clevos - so I think I'll broaden my list of potential machines as I wait for the launch.

It's like all things you can wait for the next best thing. Sure the 1080 was announced but I'd hardly say the 980m is struggling as i'm playing Doom at 2K on Ultra/Nightmare graphics at 120fps. Sure you can wait and i'm sure it will have the legs on the 980m but you'll then get to the following year for the 2080

The 980m isn't struggling unless you want to get into VR - there's a pretty clear division between this generation and the next in that regard.

Agreed, if VR is your thing then your probably best waiting for the 1080. I don't think VR is anywhere near ready so I don't see the point at this moment.

Lol. Boy you said it. They are certainly struggling to keep up with 1080 demand. Jeesh.

.....unless this is an intentional move on their part to push the FE cards at the higher price.
