Think it can handle 3000MHz RAM?
::iunlock:: -
Yes the mobo
regarding the 3000, i dont think dell would confirm that for selling their own chips.
So we would need someone to manually check that out. -
i dindt know but intel xtu alow me to reduce tRAS on my memory ... i think i can do overclock, what do you think @iunlock

Man... 3000Mhz ram in these laptops. Could launch the space shuttle from the back of your car.

I'm curious as to why anyone would want to put the higher speed memory in their computers, especially since the CAS latency on the DDR4 ram is really not good. You have to get well over 3000Mhz for the clocks to be able to offset the high latency, which gets very expensive fast. I'm getting the Kingston HyperX Impact 32GB kit ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104667) to put in my 17R4, which is clocked at DDR4 2400 with a CL of 14, returning a realtime latency of just over 5ms, compared to the more than 6ms returned by most memory 2667Mhz+. Not to mention I've seen people able to overclock this RAM to over 2500Mhz while maintaining the low CL, so it's going to be the ticket winner for me.

Ordered the AW15R3 with 8 GB of 2400MHz of RAM. Looking to add an additional stick on arrival to achieve 16GB total. Would either of these sticks work?

all this high speed ram in a gaming laptop or desktop for that matter is pure snake oil, as said already it'd all about the CAS Latency -

Warning: If your laptop does not boot after switching to XMP profile(s), be prepared to do an NVRAM reset. -

yes, default is 2667 in Corsair. I don't see the option to change xmp profile in Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. I thought it was just only for cpu tunning. Are you sure you can change it from XTU?
-
There are no XMP or RAM triming controls in the BIOS on either 1.0.2 or 1.0.8. Dell does offer DDR4-2667 RAM as an option so I HOPE they have tested that...although I'm not going to hold my breath with some of the crap lately.
RAM will make for small changes in performance. If you are increasing capacity..it's worth it. For pure speed, this isn't DDR1/2 days. Changes in REAL WORLD USEAGE will be next to impossible to notice. Money is better spent on more storage for the m.2 slots.
EDIT:...If you can use Optimus, iGPU's CAN ACTUALLY benefit from additional RAM speed and decreased latency. That's the only Real World benefit I can see from the additional speed.Last edited: Dec 6, 2016 -

You going to try for RAID 0 with those 2 drives? The definitely is Support in the BIOS for that. Curious to know if the DMI 3.0 in these laptops can handle all that speed. Should as this has been tested with other Z170 systems that have DMI 3.0 but this is the laptop setup, not desktop. Also wonder if the NON-Cooled PCH in this system can handle the additional heat this kind of speed may create. -

I plan to install heatsinks to 960 pro discs. I think that will suffice to beat the problem of temperature.
I will first try these Thermal Heatsink Copper (3 in each ssd)

or this Aluminum Heatsink

Guys, are there any 32GB ddr4 sticks ? I need to upgrade my alienware 17 R4 to 64GB ram.

Hey there 343, did you get that hyper x ram linked below ? I have the i7-6820hk Alienware 17r4 and I'm trying to decide on a 32gb ram kit.
-
- I took the laptop cover off, removed battery. Replaced RAM, and the laptop would not boot, no POST. Power LED blinks red twice, blue four times. Tried holding FN to boot into the system test, no luck.
- Performed an NVRAM reset by detaching the CMOS battery and doing a power drain. I also did the trick where you insert the memory slot very quickly after a reboot in this state. No dice.
- After further research, I have determined that both RAM sticks are functional. The laptop will boot if either new ram stick is in slot 1, but if either is placed in slot 2, alone or together with the other stick, the computer will not boot.
- To double blind check, I tested my old RAM (the crucial 2x8GB that came with the system) and both sticks work independently in slot 2.

If the computer can POST with both slots filled with the old RAM, that proves there is no damage to the slots. What CPU do you have?
Ram controller is built into the CPU. I don't think there's anything built into the mem sticks that allows for 2 channel operation but I need to research that.
Try this test: 1 new RAM stick slot 1, 1 older 8GB stick in slot 2and see if you can POST. -
Awwww Jeeze, sorry to hear about that. I'll keep watching this thread for good news, and keep you posted too!

Just spoke with a Crucial rep who has "Guaranteed" that this RAM will work in my Alienware 17 R4: www.crucial.com/usa/en/alienware-17-r4/CT9511927
I'll install the ram when it arrives next week and keep y'all updated.
My alienware 17r4 specs:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6820HK (Quad-Core, 8MB Cache, Dynamically Overclocked up to 4.1GHz)
- Windows 10 Home-HE (64bit) English

Vengeance® Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHz CL18 Memory Kit (CMSX32GX4M2A2666C18)
- Density: 32GB (2x16GB)
- Speed: 2666MHz
- Tested Latency: 18-19-19-39
- Auto-overclocking with compatible notebooks (no BIOS configuration required).
Works great on the new i7 Skylake CPU mine is the Alienware 17-R4 clocks to 4.1ghz and this memory ram runs fantastic 32gb of blazing fastness!!!
High bandwidth and latency time!!! -
-
Corsair ddr4-2666 (18-19-19-39)
Latency time is 68.9 ns
Read 35.093 mb/s
Write 41213 mb/s
Copy 35.570 mb/s
And this is ddr4-2133 (15-15-15-36)
Latency time is 74.4 ns
Read 29.894 mb/s
Write 32.379 mb/s
Copy 29.696 mb/s
the bandwidth are excellent and according to expectations, even the actual latency numbers (in terms of ns rather than clock cycles) are better than the Kingston HyperX kit... -
Sure, for the 2133 stuff. Nowhere close for 2400@CL14. Check out the data sheet here: http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX424S14IBK2_32.pdf
46.75ns...a little better methinks XD -
Looks this -
Do you think that 3000Mhz Corsair Ram will work. I've seen that 2666Mhz works but nothing about 3000Mhz. Has a better CAS latency.
-
You might think that the memory is a bit better at 2400 Mhz that of 2666 Mhz. But this difference is more than compensated for the latter since having a higher frequency has many more cycles in which to transmit data.
I believe a higher frequency is always better, since there are more clock cycles in which to transmit data. In addition, the latency will then be practically the same since in spite of having more clock cycles of waiting, these are shorter to operate to greater frequency.Last edited: Dec 11, 2016 -

I bought some new RAM for my 15 R3, its the HyperX 2400 CL14. I returned it due to having a white smudge near the capacitors/fuses. I didn't notice it until after I opened it. Got my replacement RAM today (same kind) and before opening it I decided to look at the contacts and it's definitely been in a machine at least once. My question is - does RAM physically get tested inside of a machine which will leave marks on the contacts? I never really cared to look, but when it comes to Amazon (they've sent me "used" stuff as "new" before whether its their fault or another companies), I kinda question their "new" electronics and considering its going in a 2000$ laptop, I think its fair to be safe. I mean the package has a "100% tested" sticker on it. But then if it was 100% tested and new, why would it have this white leakage looking thing?

Often have you heard that told.
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold.
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.
Had you been as wise as bold,
Young in limbs, in judgment old,
Your answer had not been inscrolled
Fare you well. Your suit is cold—
Cold, indeed, and labor lost.
