You should be able to get them to replace it with a non-CMI display (especially since the CMI display has supposedly been pulled from the production line for new machines, at least in the U.S.)

The touch screen is glossy but the regular screen is matte (anti-glare). Also... the touch screen is not 1080, I think it is 900?

You can get a 1080 touch screen. I thought perhaps the touch screen technology might cause a degradation in video quality, but I don't know how they make them.

Well, thanks Aaron, but I think I will have to spend a lot of energy trying to convince Dell support, if possible, and I just don't feel like it.
Besides, as I wrote, my current CMI display is not bad, just not as wonderful as the other components of the M6600... ;)

To clarify, the sub-standard display panels are the CMO and you should be eligable to receive a replacement (if in the USA and optional overseas).

It seems Dell USA is currently replacing the panels with the LG LP173WF1, which is not as good (in my opinion) as the AUO B173HW01 v.5. Unfortunately, yesterday my v.5 control board failed so although my original panel was a AUO v.5, it looks like I am getting downgraded to the LP173WF1 (not happy since I am told I should get the same panel as on the original invoice, which again is the AUO v.5).

At any rate, I will compare the specific LG panel I receive to the proven AUO v.5 I am use to. If needed, I will just return it and keep requesting the correct panel and/or install an extra AUO v.4 I have here while I wait for a v.5 from my own source in Asia.

Hi, I just got a M6600 from the outlet, guess I'm joining here.

To be honest, I've wanted workstation quality laptops, but I really don't do graphics intensive work. It was just that the build quality, the looks, the raw power and quietness as well as the 3 year NBD warranty + pricing that sold me on getting the m6600.

Are there ordinary students like myself who carry around this machine?

I noticed that the weight is like 9 pounds if I factor in the power cord, and although it is less heavy than the 12~14 pounds of the alienware stuff, it is still something..

Should I get a small laptop to carry around for casual school work?

Oh, good point there, Scott... I'm just short of ordering my AUO v.5 from Taiwan as a replacement for my LG173WD1 1600 x 900 panel. I'm planning on changing it myself, and considering what you said about the control board, would I need to change the control board/inverter for my AUO to work? I have some experience with opening laptops, but it'll be my first time changing panels... Always room for learning new tricks.

    Thanks in advance :)

I've been done with school for a few years but when I was in school I carried around an Inspiron 1720. Not the same machine but pretty much the same in terms of size and weight.

It never really bugged me, I just had a nice padded bag to carry it in that slings over my shoulder. It's not hard to find a bag that has room for the laptop, power supply, a few small accessories and a stack of papers or a folder or a textbook or something. If you need to carry multiple books or a large binder or something, you might need an extra bag. Sometimes I would carry a regular backpack in addition to the laptop bag.

I bought the machine as a "desktop replacement" so that I could carry all of the stuff I needed to work around with me... no having to deal with syncing files between machines or remote desktop or whatever. 10 pounds isn't too much to carry around for all of that. So, it's just a matter of what you're willing to put up with. :p

Really depends on what u want... If u have desktop at home, maybe. But if u are looking for true desktop replacement, consolidating both, keep the M6600 since it providesm u options to upgrade almost everything.

I do bring my M6600 around a lot. I am using a Targus Drifter II 17, and I have plenty of room for things and the backpack is very comfy for me. It is considered a taller backpack... Messenger style is a little hard to find for this labby since it is a little longer than usual 17. I have heard that the AW has a nice one...

To cut down weight, I dont carry the 240w power brick with me on the go. I use a 150w slim and for normal stuff, plenty good but battery do takes time to charge if depleted. So, I make sure it is charged at home with the 240w in the evening.

I don't understand why the M6600 has only got one hdd bay. I am buying mine on Mon or Tues and have just realised there is only one bay. This is a RPITA to me as I wanted a 500GB HDD with a 1TB backup drive. This means I have got to backup externally which I didn't want to do. Any ideas arond this? Can you fit an HDD in the DVD carrier?

Weird I have just downloaded the user manual from Dell and it say's I can fit a secondary HDD. The Dell chat line operator said it didn't support a second drive.
    Can I or can't I?
