I'm also interested in knowing about the make and model of the IPS panel. Reason being I'd like to see if it's available from panel suppliers.

I bought a unit which to me should be a refurbished unit, cheap considering it's configuration :) The only downside is that I've no option to upgrade the screen from it's current 1600x900 panel. I contacted the supplier that Scott_RC-TEK had mentioned before and got a quote for an AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5 with available stock. problem is, the picture she showed me doesn't come with the Dell P/No. and they don't guarantee compatibility. Should I make the plunge and order it? I'm also considering sourcing for the IPS panel instead.

    Thanks all :)

The benchmark results between M8900 and 6970M should be exactly the same.
I installed a simple Catalyst driver an the graphics card is shown as ATI Radeon HD 6970M Blackcomp.

That's nice to know. OK I am almost pressing the 'BUY' button. What about how the standard Precision LED FHD 1920*1080P versus my old wuxga 1920*1200. I use Spyder3Elite color management.
Do you think the Precision M6600 will be as good?

The panel in the Vostro 1700 is likely the same one in the Precision M90 or M6300.

You will go from 45% to 72% on the color gamut. This will cover the full sRGB color space. You will have basically the same color response as a Dell 2007WFP monitor. I have measured both panels.

You will also more than double your brightness due to the WLED backlighting.

I still occasionally use my M6300 and the panel is dim and washed out compared to the M6600 with the FHD WLED panel. The RGBLED IPS panel should be the best panel yet released by Dell. I can't wait to finally see one, test it, and post results here.

I can't wait either, I have hit the 'BUY' button. Thanks for that info, I am sure I won't be disappointed.
One other thingy, would I be able to upgrade from FHD to IPS later on as this Precision seems pretty flexible?

The short answer is yes. We know that the M6600 (unlike the M4600) uses the same motherboard for all display variants.

What we don't have is a complete list of the parts that would be needed to swap the panels. My best information shows that you would need:

    312-1305 RGB LCD Cover
    320-2919 is RGB Back-Lit

And that the cost of the two assemblies would be $770 + shipping and tax.

But those two parts may not be the right ones. It is simply my best guess.

We also do not have confirmation that the ATI video card will work with the IPS panel.

Right now we have to wait for people to order and receive the IPS panel equipped machines and report back to the forums.

Nice price - Go for it! Just confirm the latest firmware is installed on the drive BEFORE its first use and you should not have any issues.
