Now that I've had time to re-visit the issue I was having with hard drive noise, I contacted support last week and got them to send a replacement drive. They sent a Seagate Momentus as a replacement. Unfortunately the seeking is just as loud on the Seagate as the original drive. I don't know if I just have bad luck or if my idea of how quiet these drives are supposed to be is way off base. Is it normal for the seeking to be audible even from a few feet away?

I have a few days before I have to send it back, but I may just return the Seagate and keep the original drive to save myself the trouble of reinstalling all of my programs. Then maybe I'll keep an eye out for SSD deals.

    Seagate are notoriously noisy.
Western Digital laptop HDD's really depends on the model.
Hitachi are very quiet (I have it on my E6400)

If it's a Seagate Momentus XT (the one that the a hybrid SSD and HDD), then keep it for your desktop as it's most likely faster than your current HDD in there, and buy a laptop HDD. If it's the normal Momentus then forget it, call them again, until it's a quiet one.

During the time my E6410 was functional, the Seagate MomentusXT 500 GB wasn't any quieter/noiser than the 160GB 5400 rpm Hitachi it replaced. Maybe it's I don't even notice the noise..

    Hello everyone,

I am curious about my backlit keyboard. I thought that there were 3 settings; off, on, or auto. When I press Fn and right arrow once, it lights up, but only for awhile. If I do the same sequence twice, I get the same result; It lights up but only for awhile unless I use the touchpad. Third option, off, seems to work as advertised. What gives?

    Fn+Right-Arrow Keyboard illumination:
    OFF
ON Auto ALS (lit upon input in dim lighting)
    ON (lit upon input)

Use DCP to set input device, brightness, and auto OFF delay.

Thanks GK! I had thought "on" meant on all the time. That clears things up for me, I appreciate it.

When turned ON, it turns off automatically after a few seconds. But as soon as you press any key it turns back on. This is normal.
You can change the time which auto-turns it off in the Dell Control Point Panel.
