It is in fact a 700w power inverter. It's in my work truck wired with 4ga wire to the battery terminals with an 80 amp fuse. It powers a small laser printer, mifi charger, my D830 (90w), phone charger just fine. I just don't know why the erratic touchpad when using the E6510?

I also ended up scaling the DPI up to 150% as some text in a few applications was ultra-small. So far so good. The LED screen is super bright! I have the brightness nearly all the way down.

    You need a "dongle."

There are a wide variety of DisplayPort to HDMI and DisplayPort to DVI adapters.

70W is not much use... I suspect 700W is correct.

I would measure the inverter output voltage to see if it is holding up.

I would also try a plug adapter with the third ground prong remove to see if removing that link makes a difference.

That's right, the Latitude E-series has a DisplayPort because there are no royalty fees, hence it's cheaper for Dell. However, I don't see any other advantages, especially since almost every consumer quality notebook has a HDMI port these days. It all comes down to Dell saving a few cents on royalties so the end users end up paying for dongles.

And that's all the original poster needed to know. I disagree with most of the rest of your comments, which at best represent TMI (too much information) and at worst reflect your affinity for retrotech.

The OP needs a dongle, that's all.

Changing the topic to DVD burners, i'm replacing the DVD-ROM on my E6510 & was wondering if one brand burner was better than another. Also, was wondering if all laptop dvd-drives had the quick-release button(?) on the bezel like mine does.

Nope. The latch mechanism on the E6410/E6510 is unique.

Big problem with doing dual monitor setups is Dell doesn't seem to pay much attention to getting audio working through DP with most of their display drivers. Have to use the driver that's 3 or 4 generations back for it (audio) to work.

BTW, bios version A06 is up in case anyone hasn't found it yet. Dunno how much it fixes in normal day-to-day use.

So, between a ts-u633 and du-8a2, which would be the better choice?

I'd go with the latter (or a DU8a3 if you can find that), especially if you use it for reading burned DVDs. Not sure if it was the same model drive, but the Toshiba I had would choke on quite a few DVD+/-Rs while the PLDS (Philips Liteon) would work ok with them.

Speaking of that latching mechanism, I'm assuming it's more of a convenience/nicety than a necessity to have a drive with one of those on it. Eyeing Bluray drives if something should turn up in my price range.

How else would one install an optical drive in the E6xxx if there wasn't a latching mechanism?
