This will be a tricky question.. I need to know since I am building an XFR bottom up.

It looks like the XFR does not use the trackpoint 3 buttons like in the E6400. Those buttons are left missing and the area where buttons are supposed to be are screwed down to prevent water from seeking in.

But I doubt Dell uses anything so different between the two. You can even see the three metal contact points where the three buttons are supposed to contact.

Does this mean I can get a regular E6400 keyboard and just "break out" the three buttons on the keyboard and it will fit right into the XFR?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

The E5x00 and E5x10 also use keyboards without the trackpoint and those work fine in E6x00 and E6x10. Functionally (as a working keyboard) it'll probably be fine, but if they treat the XFR keyboard with something to make it more waterproof (like that seal you were talking about), then that stuff might not work properly if you mod an E6x00/E6x10 keyboard, and I assume that's important to you if you're getting an XFR.
