Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced options > Display > Adaptive brightness. Turn it off. This is covered in the Wiki. ;)

I'm on my exchange unit and I thought it wasn't there at first, but I noticed that the exchange unit that was supposedly produced less than 10 days ago also has a coil whine issue. Unfortunately in my case, I sent back my original before I realized that this one's sound was even louder during just an idle period... I've sent my Dell support representative another email regarding this to see if I can exchange it again to see if I am lucky this time, but I am starting to lose faith....

So yeah guys, coil whine is still present in the recently manufactured ones...

    All,
I'm not having much luck searching but I think this was covered. My touchscreen stops responding after 30 minutes or so. If I close the lid and then open it the touch screen comes back. I've already done the firmware update. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

No idea how to make Win 8 smaller. I don't like closing the cover that much and for a while it didn't do it. Perhaps I should ask Dell.

I chatted with dell about adding another 8GB of RAM to my M3800 and this is the memory they said I should buy:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV : Memory | Dell

It seems way overpriced though, so I'm wondering if maybe I could go with one of these and save myself $40:

    Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model BLS8G3N169ES4
    Crucial Laptop Memory - Newegg.com

    This is what CPU-Z shows:

    Nathand and jerryyyyy,

Dell uses different vendors for their RAM so its normal for both your machines to have different RAM manufacturers.

The one you found at Newegg should work fine. The bold is because I've seen cases where matching up all of the specs (and sometimes both the specs and vendor) nonetheless results in a system that will boot with either of the two modules installed but not both simultaneously. But Newegg has great customer service, so a return shouldn't be too difficult in the worst case. The only way to minimize the risk of incompatibility any further would be to buy a 2x8GB kit and throw out your existing module or buy the Dell-certified module, but of course either of those would be much more expensive.

And yes, Dell marks up their memory. Not nearly as bad as Apple, but it's pretty standard. Part of that is to cover Dell's costs to test the memory with the target system and the value of guaranteed compatibility and interoperability with your existing memory rather than simply very likely compatibility and interoperability, like the Newegg module. And another part is because Dell-purchased memory inherits the system warranty when installed in a supported system (including NBD on-site service/shipping benefits), which third-party memory obviously doesn't. But whether all of that is worth the added cost for you is of course up to you.
