Not only does the 1.6Ghz option appear on www.dell.com and
seemingly all other Dell sites, but 1.6Ghz systems are already
available on Dell Outlet as well, so presumably they've been around
for a while now. I don't know if they come with any other design
    improvements...

    regards,
    -John

New Control Point System Manager software download available

There is a new update on the CP system manager software, dated 8/4/09. Has anyone tried this on Windows 7? Just wondering if it fixes the brightness control problem.

I installed it last night when I installed 7 x64 RTM on my E6400. I don't see any difference...but you want me to check something?

Yes. The problem was with the LCD backlight control. When you disable the ambient light sensor, can you adjust the LCD brightness up and down now (with the FN+up/down keys)? We have not been able to do that, and we could only adjust brightness when ambient light sensor is enabled.

Edit: Never mind, there is no problem with the E6400. I thought you had a E4200 since this is the E4200 thread.

And it does work on the E6400. ;)

I don't see the Control Point System Manager dated 8/4/2009 on the E4200 download page. I do see it on the E6400 page. I will try that on my E4200 and report back.

[EDIT] Hmmm.....not on the E6400 page either. I bet it was pulled. I did notice it mentioned Windows 7 in the notes. I think I still have a copy. Stay tuned.

[EDIT2] Sorry....I'm blind. Didn't look under "Control Point." There she is.

It's still borked. No adjustments when ALS is disabled. Weak.

Thanks. No great surprise here. I think we have to wait till Windows 7 is released before seeing a fix from Dell.
